Brandi, not sure to be honest. I thought it was a kacki, but can't remember. Yes your feed bill will be high until you get them out on their own. Then they will forage a lot and be beautiful lawn ornaments. I bet they are nearly full grown. Probably will be in a few more weeks.

They look to be almost full grown. But their stub wings remind me of the flight controls on Ironman's suit when he operates them.

I hacked up the duck cage yesterday and expanded it to 12x10 feet. 6x8 feet was just not enough for 10 almost grown ducks. They are really getting big and taking on the colors the hens will have for life.

Brandi, how old are your ducks now (roughly) I just "inherited 3" from my nephew, (he lost the use of his right hand working on one of our paint rigs) Now I have the little ducks for at least 2-3 weeks, then they are supposed to go to Oklahoma. I am thinking in3 weeks, they will be darn near grown!

Thats what I thought, I knew you haven't had them very long. Now I need to figure out something temporary, since they grow so fast. He brought them over in a 2'x3' plastic storage container!!

Know he understands why uncle Dennis always tells them to be careful with 2400psi hoses! he injected paint in his finger trying to pull a hose off a turning belt ad bam!! Surgeons spent 4 hrs cutting a 4" slit up his finger to remove the paint, now he has to have bandages inserted everyday into the incision (very painful as he does it at our house (my wife being a nurse). He is fortunate though, they said he had a 60% chance of loosing the finger prior to surgery.

Wow Dennis,
That has to be painful. I pray he will keep the finger. What is his name?

If I was making a temp. pen, I would drive 6 steel posts in a circle on well drained land and wrap in 6 foot chicken wire. 6 feet tall cause you gonna get in it and clean it and such. Throw chicken wire on top and hope nothing digs under.

They gotta have enough water for drinking, preening their new feathers and why I don't know.......for their feet. So they waste a lot of water and get it dirty very quickly sticking their feet into it. I change the water out twice a day. I am using two galvanized 5 gallon waterers and one 1 gallon waterer. They have most of the water gone each time I visit their cage. The 5 gallon galvanized waterers are $35 each.

I'm using flake pine shavings, in bags from TSC at $5 a pop. So it's adding up. I don't clean it out every few days, but add shavings on top to help keep it clean and give them a dry place to lay.

They are so funny laying down and throwing their feet out backward.

His name is Channing, we call him Chase. He went back to the Surgeon yesterday and looks like he will keep the finger, as long as he doesn't allow an infection. I hope he gets better so he can take these daum ducks!

I bought a cheap jon boat to get to the island. It leaks in two places. But we got the island weed eated and planted a Cypress Tree a neighbor gave me.4-21-14 Island with New Cypress Tree.jpg

We then caught the ducks and snipped flight feathers off their right wing. We took 5 of them out and released them. I was on the bank with a broom keeping Booger honest. That didn't work. Booger almost got one as my friend threw them out of the boat "towards" the island. Only one went onto the island as the other 4 tried to get up the shore, searching for their other 5 pen mates. I kept running around the bank keeping the first 5 corralled in the pond while waving a broom at them when they got close to the shore. My friend got the other 5 out of the pen, trimmed the right wing and carried them out to the pond. These 5, I told him to release on the island, which he did. They finally all got together and settled down and played and preened.

Next batch (if ever) of ducklings will be raised right on the island.

Naw, you've got to do the next batch of ducks just the same...........only get the film crew working and have a video for all of us to enjoy. Look out Duck Dynasty, Brandi may put you guys out of work.

We need to come up with a catchy title....."Brandi's just Ducky" or "Ducks Gone Wild" or "Duck Island" or "Broom Training Ducks(and Booger)".......ah, maybe I need to work on this a little more.

Sounds like quite the adventure herding ducks!!! LOL

Are they staying out at the pond permanently now? I have four ducks and two geese. All paired up and nesting right now. We're waiting to see what Mother Nature brings us.

Brady and I, both, were wore out after the ducks settled down. They seemed to camp out last night at the pond's shore. When Luke shot a frog in the other pond, we heard them beating wings on water to escape the unseen noise. When I woke up this afternoon, I found them free ranging way in the back of my property, near my neighbors barbed wire fence, at the end of my other neighbor's PVC pipe post and wire field fence.

You can see where they are going by looking at the photo of the island in post # 274. They are going along the white post fence through high grass in a low spot. Back in the trees. They are having a blast back their finding all kinds of things to eat. They are eating floating catfish food when I throw it to them in the water.

We got over 6 inches of rain over the weekend. The ducks were loving it. They were floatingdown the overflow culvert, catching baby crawdads and riding the white water out the end. I was gonna get a video of it, but they stopped just as I got the camera phone out there. Anyway.........as you can see...........the pond is full and the fence catching debris made a two foot deep pond for them to play in. Later, after this photo was taken, the pond kept raising and went 6 inches over the spillway! 3-9-15 Pond Full Ducks Play.jpg3-9-15 Pond Fence Overflow.jpg

The ducks are mating now and watching them do it in the water is something to see. The poor hen is underwater with just her bill sticking out. Yes sir, it is quite a sight!
