Insuring a tractor

When I bought my MX 5000 I called my State Farm agent to see if was covered. He stated if it was less than 50 HP, it would be covered under the homeowner policy. But because it was 50HP and above, I needed an equipment rider attached to the homeowner policy. The insurance is only for fire and theft and maximum amount payable was original payment price including the taxes. I realize insurance underwriting laws in Ontario Canada would be different. Perhaps you have to take out a commercial policy, but they have a hefty deductible I am sure.

I wanted insurance for my B2320, and had to shop around quite a bit for it.

I wanted to be able to use it on the road with a trailer and FEL to get fertilizer from a few miles away.

I was able to get a farming rider on my HO policy to cover this, as long as it was used for my personal farming purpose.

The company is Auto Owners Insurance.

Wow, hate to reopen an ancient thread here, but there are three questions involved here, I think, and they are equivalent to a car. A car has three types of insurance, normally. Comprehensive (and glass) covers your car if a tree falls on it. Collision covers it if you drive into the tree. Liability covers you if you drive the car into someone or something and cause damage or injury.

I am willing to self-insure on the tractor damage itself, but would like liability insurance for when I take it over the country road here, which I do occasionally. I don't think my homeowners liability ("personal liability") covers that at all. I would be willing to pay for collision and/or comprehensive coverage if I had to to get the liability, but my car insurance company doesn't cover tractors and I don't think homeowners' does either. A marine type policy is not really appropriate for liability because marine has strange liability laws. From what I understand, if you are at fault in a boat accident, if negligence cannot be established then you are only liable for the value of your craft prior to the accident. In a vehicular situation, or even say, the case of cutting someone's grass (as my sister's, not business) and, say the mower throws a rock and injures someone, I wouldn't be covered. This is the kind of thing that makes my blood boil. As an aside, homeowners' policies are skyrocketing in premiums, but if you look at your policy, you might be shocked to see that some things aren't covered. Floods never are, but things like earthquake or ground movement used to be and have been mostly excluded. Mold and rot have been severely curtailed in most policies that I've seen, often with only like a $10K limit. The insurance racket has become insanely crooked over the years, and it worries me, a lot.

It's not a marine policy, it's an inland marine policy. You would need to contact an insurer and ask them the difference amount of liability each policy has. I don't have mine close by but like my auto insurance the amount of liability is based more on how much I stand to loose.

For around your house you might check out an umbrella policy. I have a million dollars insurance for $210 per year. Ask your agent and see what it covers. I never thought about it covering a tractor accident.

I also have the 1mm umbrella, which does cover the tractor for liability...

After discounts cost adl $112/yr.

I shopped around and if you compare actual coverage to coverage on the KTAC vs most others the KTAC is cheaper for FULL coverage. Covers replacement value and not depreciated value for one. 250.00 deductible and it doesn't matter where it goes on or off you property to name a few. The number of the "oh by the way" exclusions on many of these HO, umbrella and auto policies aren't realized until you are making the claim and then you can be S.O.L. KTAC is fully looking to cover theirs and your investment, something most Insurance companies don't give a darn about other than just collecting the premium and hopefully being able to deny or only partially pay the claim. Those premiums in general are white collar welfare going to some ill deserving CEO and management structure. Not that I am cynical just relating history and reality.
Caveat emptor.

My dealer indicated that the insurance offered by Kubota Finance (which I think you are referring to) is only offered if you finance your machine with them, and only while there is a balance due on the machine.

Not available for cash buyers.

That is probably true and I must not have read the OP well enough to know that was the case. My impression was that KTAC was an option to start with. My mistake. At zero percent finance right now it would pay to finance and get the insurance IMO. I just received my new policy from Kubota on my recently delivered GL3940 and there is a company out of Ohio that underwrites it. I wonder if there is a way of going to that source for independent coverage. My biggest point is to be aware of what these companies truly cover no matter where you go.

I got a policy from KTAC and I paid cash for my tractor. I think if you finance your tractor you are required to insure it.
