Interesting article about oil change interval

Just want to throw something out there for discussion. Even if we can go 5000 miles or more between oil changes is it a good idea to wait that long to grease the front end, because we usually do both at the same time? I don't think so, so I'm back to every 3000 miles.

I never gave a defn. nor hinted at one. All Im trying to do is understand why synthetic is best. So far no one has answered the question. So, if you now then Id like to hear your argument. Even if it has a supuerior capacity to suspend the by products of combustion and whatever else engine function and the environment are contributing the filter won't maintain the same performance. So you wind up recylcing all of this continuously thru the engine. Is this an incorrect understanding? If it isn't then theres little advantage in my view of using a synthetic in the engine.

jimg- the answer yes can extend the oil changes like I have posted many times (do a search). I have even compared the same car, as posted above etc. I do not see any thing abnormal. Think what you what but extended drains have worked for a long time. Again nothing new. People need to get out of the old mind set or listening to people say this and that.

Again, you have your mind made up by your post, and that is great. I have been doing extended oil changes for about 10-years. And you know, they do work as the oil tests show.

From the mile you put the oil in, you are recylcing all the used oil. The synthetic oil is only as good as the filter and the filters are up to par pretty good (as noted in my last test). I change 2 filters per year. It can't be one since you do know know how the next guy's care burn's, or what abouse the engine has on it.

The filter issue is about as good as you can't switch back to dino once you go to synthetic.

Some go off rpms, some off odometrer and some are optical sensors.

When looking at the table at the end of the document, I did not see too many instances where synthetic was substantially better than petroleum based when it came to diesel rated oils. I use Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40 which he rated 684 and the best diesel rated synthetic was 776. If I look at it from a standpoint of which oils I can readily obtain then the best would be 750.

What is fascinating to me is the inconsistency of the manufacturers to produce a quality product. In one part Valvoline is one of the worst in 15W40 range, then has a high rating in another weighting of oil...

I don't know about oil, but a friend of mine is a big distributor of grease. Within the same brand of grease, there are at times several different manufacturers. In other words, not all "Case" grease is made by the same plant. Not all "New Holland" grease is made by the same plant. I just assume that oil is likely the same. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Joe-
I do not know what oil this is in reference too. Also it depends on what you define was substantially better or what is important to you. I look at high ZDDP, high TBN, Low pour point, ZERO ash, below 7.5 Noack Volatility %, low scar on 4-ball,and some other things.

Just using the pour point, more then half are gone, throw in the high TBN which I like, another 30% gone, next throw away the above let’s say 8.0% in Noack and so on. Even better, take all the oils that have ASH and do not include them, what do you have left? No many.

The way I use my oil, I could never use Delvac. It is lacking in Phosphorus and Calcium. Delvac is good and delo has a better base oil. Delvac is better then Rotella from what I have read.

Have you actually looked to see how few zerks there are on cars today? Some don't have any. I think we can pretty much rest assured that cars are going for more miles today then they did in the 60's and part of that is because the manufactuers have figured a lot of things out. I'll stick to the schedule they recommend, not the one from Jiffy Lube. If I start questioning their time interval for oil changes, I might as well question a whole bunch of other maintainence issues. Let's start with tires. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mike,

If I'm not, then let me be the first to nominate you for the Oil Aficionado Guru of the year!! I have never seen anyone with so much in depth knowledge on the subject of the slippery stuff as you always seem to have at the ready!@!

Keep going , I for one appreciate your research and tenacity!!

BTW just how much oil is in your Coonskin/Beaver hat and is that Dino, Hydrocracked or God forbid syntietic ??? Just a question that I'll bet you can answer or in your typical fashion have the temerity to find out!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My best regards to all of you Fact finders, as for me we just use it and pump it from the ground!!!

Mike,

What oil and weight do you use in your tractor? When I looked at your earlier post, I think that was in reference to your car.

Thanks,

Joe
