Since I had been complaining about the 790 starting hard at altitude and low temps I wanted to put out some new info. I have been keeping the block heater plugged in for the last month and the thing starts like a car.

You might consider putting a Timer on your Block Heater-set it for 2-3 Hours before you are going to move Snow-why? Your Block Heater works on the convection theory (no Pump), so all you have is an element-it's not like we sell tons of elements, but we do sell them-using a Timer will make it last a long time.

As far as the Altitude thing, long ago I sold a lot of Backhoes and such up in Vail-M&W offered an Altitude Compensating Turbo (less Boost) for that Application, and we had no issues-don't forget that if you have decided to go non Turbo that possibly you may have to re-curve the Injection Pump-it can induce way too much fuel-I had machines in Aspen that absolutely would not run and smoked up a storm-as for percentage, we were told that the Altitude correction COULD be as low as 3% but as much as 5% per 1000 ft. of elevation-

And, remember, (and I'll bet you know this), that if you re-curve the Pump that they decrease the Fuel, and that means less power-

I have been to JohnM's house in NC. Trust him - he does a lot of work with his equipment up on his little hills. Quite a bit of steep grade just in his own back yard and then he climbs up to help out the neighbors.

I have a 3320 here in flat IL and would not go smaller on my 6 acres. 3520 or 3720 should be your goal. You will thank me and him latter.

I will definitely put the heater on a timer now that I know that it solves the starting problem. I can't find any references of a after market turbo for the JD 790. That would be an investment that I might consider if I could find one.

thanks,

If you truly want a Turbo, call Central Motive Power-they are on 59th & Broadway and regularly do aftermarket Turbo installations-

I will call them to see what they think. I only have 40 hours on the tractor since I bought it in March so I don't really want to void the warrantee. Block heater with a timer is cheaper and works for now. The tractor has plenty of power for grading and snow removal.

Thanks,

Mech,

John Deere will not void the Warranty using an Altitude Compensating Turbo-all it really does is put back the lost amount of air it would have had a Sea Level-good luck-
