I have to say I am not sure what it was. Clearly ferous (cause it stuck the the magnet). PT has a 10 micron filter, a lot of guys in PT land are working on secondary filtering to take the machine to 2 microns, usually by using a filter cart. So, It did remove something out of the system so additional filtering is always a good thing, just not sure how damaging something like that sludge really is...

Ok.. so it's metal sludge... superfines.

Is that 10 micron absolute filtering? No..

In any case.. it's what i would expect in yor filter after you added the magnets... etc..

I have tools that are magnetic and I shunt them with a ferrous bar so they don't stick to everything in the toolbox. I believe a magnet stuck to the filter is essentially inert and may look like something, but has no pull on the other side of the filter wall. Drain plugs with magnets have the magnet inside the oil reservoir.
My 2 cents.

Not so about no pull on the other side. A friend who drives a Ford van happened to have some large ring magnets like used in magnetic antenna bases. He stuck them on the inside of the steel van wall. After a week or so of driving around these large rings of stuck ferrous debris would appear on the outside of the van opposite the inside magnets :)

The magnets I used sure have pull on the inside walls. Way before I put them on my filters, my kid had one on and was sifting through the sand. Then he put one on the bottom of a coffee can and was putting sand inside it. When he dumped the sand, there were all kinds of ferrous materials sticking to the inside of the can.

Check out the attached photo....

That's the inside of an oil filter. It shows small black ferrous debris trapped and removed from the oil. Did I just save myself from an engine self destruction? Naw, but it maybe might could possibly make it last longer, who knows?

No UOA's means that this means nothing....

I've done any number of UOA's on engines after adding magnetic drain plugs but have never seen any real difference with or without the magnets. But, a UOA alone without a particle count won't really tell you anything about the number of particles under 10 microns.

No difference in the UOA means to me either the particles I found on the magnets were too small for the installed filters to catch and too small to show up in a UOA, or they're particles that the filter would have trapped anyway but instead stuck to the magnet.

There's no downside to using the magnets in any case...

That's very true. A standard UOA does not include a particle count analysis, it only shows the PPM level.

I use Filtermag products wherever possible. Necessary? no, but it's a non consumable product that aids in filtration performance. I even use on my fuel filters...

sometimes it doesn't even give you that.

we been chasing a vehicle problem that oil analysis shows having a PRESENCE of coolant in the lubricating oil.

pulled oil pan and pressure checked twice, cannot find internal coolant leak.

apparently the presence is very small, we are still running the vehicle even though every oil analysis comes back as having a PRESENCE of coolant in the oil.

I've gotten to the point where I think of UOA is just a waste of time, unless its in connection with another problem.
