sometimes it doesn't even give you that.

we been chasing a vehicle problem that oil analysis shows having a PRESENCE of coolant in the lubricating oil.

pulled oil pan and pressure checked twice, cannot find internal coolant leak.

apparently the presence is very small, we are still running the vehicle even though every oil analysis comes back as having a PRESENCE of coolant in the oil.

I've gotten to the point where I think of UOA is just a waste of time, unless its in connection with another problem.

Try a different lab?

Some of the newer oils are using sodium compounds as part of the additive package. Suppose they might have misread something like that?

You might try posting the numbers here -

Quite a bit of noise there these days but someone might be able to help.

UOA's are great for wear trending and to check on the continued usability of the lubricant. Not so great for comparing one engine to another or even one oil to another...

there aint no numbers, oil analysis just says there is a presence of coolant.

its my employers stuff, since its municipal and were talking about 1000+ vehicles I'm not concerned.

I advised them to wait until we know its using/loosing coolant internally, then we'll try to find the source.

Normal things to find on a UOA that shows the presence of coolant are Potassium, Sodium, Glycol and Water. Most all UOA's show Potassium, Sodium and Water, some show Glycol. A indication of these elements alert a lab to flag the UOA with a message about checking for coolant contamination.

Well DP, since I've had no training on UOA's, and the guy who sends me the report makes the recommendation, we chased our tail until my common sense told him to wait until we see a problem develop.

Sad part is 2 out of the 4 you stated show up in oils too! So you better not go by that.

Yes they do show up in oil. That's why you perform a VOA on oil, get a base line and when you start to see things like that rise you know there is a problem. A properly implemented and run oil analysis program can catch almost anything early in the failure stage and prevent catastrophic failure.

true but it takes more the (1) VOA to get a baseline here too.

You do know what a VOA is don't you?

Gee, let me think....(1) VOA does not mean anything since labs #'s vary (by like 20%) and so do the same labs too. You need more then (1) VOA my friend.
