Interesting Magent on Filter result

Kick- you say you have a 1000+ vehicles at work. Do you have another one with the same engine and same oil to compare it too? That may tell you if you really have coolant in the oil.

I have to say I am not sure what it was. Clearly ferous (cause it stuck the the magnet). PT has a 10 micron filter, a lot of guys in PT land are working on secondary filtering to take the machine to 2 microns, usually by using a filter cart. So, It did remove something out of the system so additional filtering is always a good thing, just not sure how damaging something like that sludge really is...

Carl, That sludge is damaging, because it represents an abrasive compound that will grind the areas that it comes in contact with, such as two plates or lobes rotating , or gears. I think your PTO pump , and steering pump is a gear pump, and is turning every time your engine is running. That stuff is really small. That metal is coming from somewhere. Some of the pumps have wear plates in them, and it's not just metal to metal, it includes some of that sludge which will add to the wear. Could be old stuff, or new material being ground off. The magnets will help some. I took my pumps to a hydraulic shop, and they took it apart and showed me the wear areas on the pump. The pumps was not leaking externally, but would only let me lift about 50%, and my implements that used a hydraulic motor, would start to run, and slow down to almost nothing. With new pumps, everything is operating normally. In most cases, most of the fine particles will sink to the bottom of the tank, and if you have ever been able to feel the stuff on the bottom of the tank, you will know what I am talking about.
