JerryK, your wood pile may not be "interesting" but it is certainly very STRAIGHT! Nicely done!

I use 5 full cords per year in a wood furnace. One side of my pole shed has two 7.5' x 8' x 9' (average height) bins. I stack another 1/2 row in front so each bin holds one year's wood.

The left bin in the above photos is this year's wood. I have already used 1/2 of one of the eight full rows and 1/2 of the extra front row. The black garbage bags contain birch bark which is used as fire starter. The right side bin is wood for 2014/2015.

I stack another year's wood outside. I have one more row to add to the outside woodpile as shown here:

This wood will be moved into the woodshed in the spring and used for the 2015/2016 season, and I'll start restocking the outdoor pile. The tarp in the photo covers more bags of birch bark fire starter.

I would eventually like to have a third covered bin to avoid restacking the wood in the spring. But it would be too far from the house, so I would need to go to some kind of pallet system as others have mentioned for that wood.

Very nice setup!! I take it the wood furnace is in the shed too? If so, thats sweet. Id love to be able to load the stove under cover and keep the flames outside the house. For my next place, Im leaning towards a gasifacation boiler in an outbuilding.

My neighbor gave me some net wrap like they use on round hay bales. When the rolls get down small he changes them out cause it is not worth it for him to get 5-10 out of roll out then have to change it in the middle of doing a feild. I also help him put the new rolls of net wrap on because they are a little heavy for him to handle. I was talking to Scooby074 about my idea of using net wrap and he showed me a video were they use net wrap in Europe to wrap their wood. I just found these smaller roll that would be easier to handle for pallets. Pallet Net Wrap Some people also bag their firewood. Dino Bags | Firewood Bag

Like the look of that smaller wrap roll. Looks easier to handle. Still think that bags may be better because no pallets. Still waiting on that bigger tractor:laughing:

I think you should still use pallets with bags. It would keep the wood off the ground, air could flow under it and the bags would hold up better.

Here's what I use. I built a frame that holds the bag open around a pallet and the wood goes straight from the splitter to the bag. It has reduced the number of times I have to handle each piece of wood by about 4. I have another pallet with large caster wheeles on my deck so I can place a pallet of wood on it and roll it up tight to the house. Each bag has almost one face cord and weights about 2000 with wet hard wood. I've been able to reuse about 75% of them and they cost about $2 each. I'm now converting my wood shed to storage, I'll never handle wood any other way.

I like that. I wouldn't have thought each of those pallets weighed 2000 lbs. Do you cover the top after you stack the pallets pyramid style?

Yes i cover them, but I learned a lesson about that the hard way last year. I covered the pyramid with a sillage tarp but as the snow built up and I used more and more of the pallets, the excess tarp started getting frozen into the ground. This year I cut strips of tarp to cover each segment of the pyramid.

As for the weight, that's just what I found online for a cord of various green hardwood. My last tractor (kioti ck 30) couldn't lift a full pallet and they don't work if they're not completely full, they just slump over. In the picture I posted of the tractor lifting a pallet, I had to go to 4 wheel drive because I was starting to loose traction backing up that small incline. That box blade just wasn't enough ballast and that's with loaded tires so its got to be between 1500-1800 lbs.

What bags are you using? Where do you get them?
