Iron in water

Now that you mention it, I have a hot tub and the addition of chlorine made the brown iron more apparent. I just thought it was the depth of water. The "metal be gone" additive cleared it right up. Not sure what that additive is but it was labeled as caustic.

We have a well and no chlorine. The water is under pressure so aerating it would be difficult.

I also have iron in the water, along with who knows what.

I use a 10 micron sediment filter and then a water softener, works great. Stops just about everything. $100 of salt a year. The softener does not run into the septic. These make all plumbing items last longer.

the sand filter i have used for over 20 years is a gravity type: the water first is released in the top of a tower, which can be made with 4 or 5, five gallon buckets, it trickles down thru each one, an onto the top of the sand, goes thru the sand and gravel filter and then into the next chamber, where i have another pump that pumps to the house: about every 3-4 months, i lose water at the house, go out and scrape off a inch or so of sand, and go again for a couple months: then once a year i clean and add sand...the sand gets stopped up with the iron, so the water won't go thru it: theres a float valve there, that shuts off the water to the tower, which means no water in the house till i clean the top of the sand: if i was more organized, i would just clean the sand every couple months and never be without water..but i usually just wait till it quits.

We just built a new house on 5 acres and the water was pletiful, but very hard and full of iron. We had a Kinetico system installed with a reverse osmosis system for drinking water for $4200. We are very pleased even though it was quite expensive. The Kinetico system is great because it never lets untreated water into your system and it requires no electric.

Heehaw, that sounds like a home made setup.
