Is a Poly Drum legal for fuel?

I posted because I felt the points I made weren't all covered in the thread and some of them just might be beneficial to others who may be wrestling with some of the same issues regardless of the current status of any user I may have been quoting.

I too use a 30 gallon Poly Drum to get diesel. I put it in the back of my pick up and have never thought about the legality of it. It is an approved fuel container, purchased especially for that purpose. In the 3 years of doing so, I've never been stopped either. But I still don't know if it's legal for transport or not?

Also interesting that Oliver posted fuel was $1.89 gal exactly 3 years ago. Around here it's way more than double that and ON road is $4.69!!! I wish my bank account would increase like that.

1*I never saw the logic in getting so hung up on the age of a thread that you become blinded to the benefit of new post made on that thread.
2*I pay the state a fee for my drivers license.
I pay them another fee for license plates on the truck.
On top of that I pay an insurance premium that the state dictates that I purchase.
So you can dang well bet that I'm going to haul what I want to in it.

A question that might be worthy of an outside post - looked, sure its been answered before, but couldn't find it.

How long is it wise to keep diesel? A 55 gallon tank would be almost 9 months use for me at current levels. I'd never keep gas that long.

I know diesel can eventually grow algae or such, and I'd have no problem adding additives to it.

Any opinions?

per topic one thing that was not mentioned but is valid. iirc from another thread some where around 300+ gal and you fall under the fuel supplier clause and must be properly trained/insured.

diesel like many have said is not of interest to any one till it spills. gas how ever is an entirely different story due to likely hood of explosion. I cant remember how much gas is required to = a stick of dinamite but its not many cans. the fire dept is likely to get to an accident and resolve any fire issues before the diesel goes up. the gas on the other hand could go up with static electricity.

the poly is not leagel but untill some kid tries to drink the whole ollive juice container in 1 sitting and gets violenty sick due to it being diesel in a olive can that was in some one elses barn will any one care. then of course the idiot who broke in to the barn will get off scott free and the farmer will get many lawsuits and fines as well as an epa visit for ensuring he has not poisoned the land. ...etc. EVEN if its just gona be in your barn to label it! stupid lawsuit happy country. those who have been truely injured are always short changed and the hot coffie spills win it all.


charlesaf3 Depends on conditions. the least ammount of head room possible = longer shelf life. less watter = less alge. also petrol vs bio bio has 2+ years of shelf life vs 6mo in a test that was done by the airforce or navy. all fuel met the atsm standards and were properly cared for. the study ended after 2 years and 90+% of the bio was still in good condition most of the dinod was green with envy. (this is being pulled from memory and summerises the text so it will be off by a tad. it was over 2x as long) also fuel additives make a huge difference

Bio is better?? Not what I would have guessed, interesting.

So 6 months is a good rule? I would put in additives - any particular recommendations? I think I use Powerboost now, but would have to check the bottle.

I'd assume the worst about headroom/algae. Certainly wouldn't put water into the diesel! But I've no idea how much would be in there from the pump?

I bought the drum and pump, but that's as far as I got. SInce I can now get deisel less than 1 mile from home and it's on my way home 5 days a week, I just toss the cans in the truck and fill up on the way home. Takes me less time than loading the drum and having to unload a full one.

My 30 gallons only lasts 3 months at the most with 2 tractors so I don't worry too much about "shelf life" in the drum.
But I also add Power Service to it before I fill it.
It has additives to help keep the fuel good for longer periods as well as added lubrication, etc.

charles i make no clames to what they added by default to all fuels. I dont remember there mention but that may also be a 101 rule. all fuel that passes the door gets x% of ... etc. I also have to put additives in to my fuel pretty much year around due to the fact we are expecting a freeze this weekend and may yet have 1 or 2 more before june. though we usually are able to get planting about next weekend or so.

Back to...Is a Poly Drum legal for fuel....

It's been a while, but I did take a hazardous materials transportation course for work. At the time they taught us that the DOT hazardous materials regulations only apply to "material in commerce". As soon as you, the end user, buy the fuel the rules no longer apply.

If anyone can cite a regulation stating otherwise, I'd love to see it.
