I got Latin in highschool from Granny Lenoir. I used to do real well at figuring out what new (to me) words in English might mean if they had Latin roots, as many do. Other than that, not much call for Latin these days, plus my language skills have decayed over time.

Four years in Puerto Rico, and all I learned was how to order coffee or beer, and I could usually figure out if I was being cussed at....a frequent event!

I know retired law enforcement Officers with combined pensions exceeding 100k

Well, I retired in January '89, so I know about the push to hire and promote minority officers. And the salaries and pensions on both the east and west coasts far exceed what us poor folks in the middle of the country get.:D

I'm all for hiring without regard to race, etc. But I'm also all for hiring people who meet a certain criteria for the job. I'm sure there are some big, tough, brawny Asian females out there....but I've never seen one.

And if I were a 250 pound fireman with a broken leg in a burning building I think my worst nightmare would be to see a 90 pound woman coming to pull me out.

Funny how these types of rules don't apply to pro sports. I wonder why. No I don't. Performance counts.

George, you're just an old fogy behind the times . . . like me!:D :D But I guess we're drifting into a forbidden area; i.e., politics and it's my fault.

Yeah, I find that a lot of people I am around transverse and intermix both English and Spanish
Overheard in a supermarket checkout line in Los Angeles:

The woman behind me in line was trying to calm a couple of rowdy kids. Finally -"Shut Up a Te'!"

I burst out laughing and turned around. She was not amused.

I've got an itty bitty sister that, when in her prime, was throwing discuss and shotput for a major university. My guess is she could have beaten nine out of ten men to a pulp. I also have two daughters that study karate. The 10 year old green belt can hold her own against much larger opponents and the 14 year old is a black belt. I once saw a young man that was considerably larger than her try to give her an unwanted hug... she warned him once. He persisted. She blocked him and put him down with one punch. (I got a little tear in my eye, sniff, sniff. :) )

Unfortunately, that example is the exception to the rule.. not the rule itself. Most femailes, race independent have a good percentage less muscle mas in their upper body compaired to a male of the same race.

I'm not into discrimimation.. but all the same.. if I'm laying down hurt.. i want to see the big 'linebacker' looking guy coming to help me... police.. fire... whatever. once i'm at the hospital.. all the 90# asian women can then take care of me ;)

I've heard over and over again how women make better combat pilots on all the radio shows and in the news. A few years ago, a Professor did a study on this and found out that those claims were false. She learned that those being asked about the skills of women pilots were intentionally embelishing their skills due to orders from their superiors. Who ordered it and why was what the debate was about.

I think the same is true with most claims that those hired to meet quotas can do to the job as well as those who score and test better.

I strongly believe that one of the biggest reasons for the amount of crime that we have in this country is because we don't have one test for becoming a police officer, and those who do the best on that test, get the job. When you hire less qualified people, that's what you get.

This is the same with every field. In every case where the person is hired because of their race, sex or language, then you know you are not getting the best person for the job.

What do female fighter pilots have to do with quotas, reduced physical requirements, or the dumbing down of qualification requirements in order to hire "minorities?" Minorities as in not great big white guys.

Nothing, in my opinion.

Going pack a few posts about English being hard to learn, I remembered I had this:

Subject: Can you pronounce the words correctly?

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to

present the present.

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine

in pineapple.

English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.

Sweetmeats are candies.while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that:

quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is

neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't

groce and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth?

One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that: you can make amends but not one amend?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,

what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum

for the verbally insane.

In what language do people: recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship

by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a

wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your: house

can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out

and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the

creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That

is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are

out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"? Go figure and I don't mean to draw something.
