Is there a tractor out there for me? 2K +/-?

Thanks for the compliments! I was almost afraid to buy it because of the low price. But I thought even if I had to overhaul it, I would still be in good shape. It doesn't have 4 wheel drive, it doesn't have a FEL, it doesn't have power steering, but, it didn't cost a lot either. I was looking for something to pull a rotary mower, box blade, landscape rack, and use a boom pole. It fits my needs at this time perfectly. Yeah, I'd like to have a new fangled tractor with all the bells and whistles, but "patience is a wonderful thing" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There are lots of tractors out there for 2k. Just shop around a bit and you will find a decent one I am sure. I missed out on a $2500 Oliver 1650 earlier this spring that I am still kicking myself over.

A dual axle 16 foot trailer more than likely has 3500 pound axles, you can haul quite a bit of tractor on one of those. I have moved a Kubota L2350 with FEL and rotary cutter on one easily, as well as a TC30 with FEL and rotary cutter.

Here is a search from tractorhouse for texas with an upper limit of $2000.

Tractorhouse search for Texas < $2000

Also check:

www.ironsearch.com

and

www.fastline.com

Of the ones on tractorhouse, I would most likely pick the Oliver as I have a wish to own one of those.

I would look for at least 20 hp, that would work for a 4 foot rotary cutter ( under reasonable conditions ), but really I would shoot for 30 hp. Stick with the major brands, don't get a grey market noname tractor you won't be able to find parts for.

Good luck!

GREAT looking tractor, and for a VERY nice price.

Hammerfour did a great job of parsing out some sources for you.

But, under the "TractorHouse" search, I would look seriously at the little 9N second from the bottom with a 972 area code.

It will do 80% of what you want, minus FEL, for little money and a lot of reliability and resale value.

In place of the FEL, a rear 3-pt bucket is not a bad solution. I've got one and moved a lot of dirt with it. If you can get by on the cheap with it, it'll serve you well.

I bought a tractor finally, but have not picked it up yet. I bought a 1952 Ferguson 30 with a brush hog and a blade. Spent $2500 and $100 more for the blade. I know it doesn't have a FEL, but tractors with FEL's are out of my price range for right now. I can always sell and upgrade later. Maybe by then I would have a better understanding of my needs in a tractor. Being this will be my 1st tractor, I am glad to get in at this price and not have payments.

I need to build some steel ramps for my 16 foot trailer. Anyone know where I can copy a design? I am a decent welder for a hobbyist, and have the equipment to cut and weld steel. I want to build the style ramps that just store under the bed of the trailer.

Head out to your local trailer dealer.. 'measure' one of their ramps on a trailer. If asked what you are doing, say that you are seeing if it will fit your tractor favorably.. that will keep the wild dogs off of you for a bit, as long as you don't overstay your welcome.

A couple heavy pieces of angle iron for side runners, and then pieces of angle cut as 'rungs', and then a piece of angle cut as an end hanger to go over or set on a lip for the rear edge of the trailer. To store, some box channel welde dunder the trailer may be good. Use a lynch pin to hold the ramps in. If you have any welding experience, and a decent stick or mig welder.. you should be good to go. I'm a 'hack' welder.. but even I was able to glue some 3/8 and 1/2 inch steel angle and flats together to make a monster 3rd ramp to load trikes onto my trailer that came with only 2 ramps... I used a big old tombstone welder, and some 6011 1/8 rod.. worked great.. strongest ugly weld i ever made.. That ramp will easilly outlast me.. I'll have to 'will' it to somebody..

Good luck on the fergy. I may be of some help , if you ever need it, with the ferguson lift system, as it will be similar as the one used on the 9n/ 2n frod tractors.. etc.
