I have been occasionally questioned how I can do such and such without having been "trained". People can be trained to do something and not have a clue what they are doing. Applying intellect, experience and common sense often yields vastly superior results to training anyway.

As far as the induced voltage goes. We would have no electricity without induction. It all starts there. Any electrical class I ever attended, started there. So this incidental induction into parallel conductors should be no surprise or mystery.

I work with turn of the century homes with many circa 1910 to 1940...

Amazing how any of us ever survived...

The ironic thing the home inspectors report will terrify home buyers with words like antiquated, knob and tube, non-grounded outlets, no GFCI, etc...

The building code and the chief building official have no issue with unmodified residential wiring in good repair... even if said wiring dates from 1922... and I have lived in a 1922 home with 100% all original 1922 bought from the original owner that spent 45 years as a childless widow...

I think some people just have a knack for DIY and some people should just call the guy. My oldest son has discovered Shark-Bite plumbing products, he's now a master plumber. My youngest boy is like me, can fix anything.

I once bid on a job where the existing home had knob and tube wiring...there were open knife switches all over the house including two on the back wall of a shower stall...!

It's interesting you mention master electricians, lack of knowledge and induced voltage in a single paragraph. Induced voltage as far as I can tell, isn't something one must understand. Most will never use it in their intire career unless in a building engineering or manufacturing invoroment. I've always felt a short course on DC circuits would make better electricians and should be required. Not only is it easier to understand the whys and what fors of wireing a building, induced voltage is used alot in DC circuits. If a person was using AC in teaching the basics, induced voltage would be buried so deep in theory most would have dropped out of the class before reaching that point. How this relate's to our situation is a person trained in electronics often confuses things almost as bad as people that don't know what they are talking about. I need to lie down :fever:I'm not sure I even understand what I just said.

I encounter induced all the time at work, I have only had it one time in a home where someone used 14-3 on a ceiling fan/light combo, and I was checking it dead. I origionally thought someone drove a staple thru the wire somewhere until I checked it w/an analog meter..induced..

I think the owner-wired work in this old farmhouse would send a home inspector screaming in terror.

The photo is under the farmhouse, not quite a basement but judging by stains on the shelving, the area was used as a pantry for storing home canned food. A 1960's remodel then made access impractical.

Dad said just bulldoze the place after he's gone, now I'm hoping it lasts long enough that I can repeat that to my kids.

I would welcome a new forum on code-quality farm wiring.

That light should have had an octopus feeding a space heater and an old 110Volt wire element range via an extension cord nailed under the linoleum!

Wow! Those knife switches sure are a modern marvel.

I've seen the same with the same screw in outlet adapter powering a small sump pump...

Looks like the termites are happy!
