Is there any interest in a Electrical education thread?

Having someone to bounce issues off and learn from would be a BOON in my world. I'll hire out wiring the barn... but there is a good chance I'll be putting in the lights, an outlet, etc etc etc.

I'm similarly situated. I occasionally turn to the internet for help with minor electrical challenges. This typically requires searching for and joining yet another forum, creating username, password, etc. Then, months later when another electronics related question arises, I can't recall the site I've used previously, let alone the username and password. Point being, I'd like to turn to TBN with questions about minor electrical challenges I face on the farm. With that said, I'm not entirely sold on a *distinct* TBN forum with a focus on electrical education. While the topic certainly is important, the current format of TBN's forum's section doesn't lend itself well to a unique electronics specific forum.

Take a moment to scan the 70+ forums that currently reside on TBN. The purpose of this "Rural Living" (sub) forum is to "Discuss all topics related to living in the country." Electronics certainly is one such topic. I'd argue that plumbing and carpentry, for example, have a high level of interest to the TBN community also. Should a specific forum be carved out for these topics?

As I type this, the Rural Living forum is being viewed by 197 viewers. There are only 3 other forums (out of 70+) being eyeballed by more. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of an exclusive electronics education related forum? I'd argue that more specificity would lead to fewer thread views as the additional forum would have a dilutive effect.

Thanks for the question mbohuntr.

I was thinking about an informal information thread to help the average homeowner better understand the day to day things that they might encounter and stay safe...
Citytransplant, the original post appear's just above what you are reading now. You might be mis-understanding the original post.

I very well may have misunderstood the OP's intent.

Just so we are all on same page (correct me if I'm misrepresenting something): There are 16 (1st level) forums in TBN "forums" section. Most are specific tractor brand forums. One is a "brand specific forum." There is also a "related equipment" and a "marketplace" forum. Finally there is an "other forums," which includes this "Rural living" (2nd level) forum. There are more than 70 total 2nd level forums in TBN. Each of these lowest level forums contain individual threads.

I assumed that the OP was asking us to consider creating a discreet electrical education 2nd level forum (to be situated within the "Other Forums" perhaps). As I look more closely at the wording of the original post, it does say "interest in a EE thread," not forum.

Is the OP is asking us to consider a new electrical education *thread* (which is how the original post was indeed worded), within the Rural Living forum? If yes, would the OP, or anyone else, suggest that the electrical education thread be a "sticky" within this forum?

In retrospect, I should've first asked where in the forum's hierarchy would the proposed Elec Ed thread (or forum) be situated?

Sorry for any confusion on my part.

I agree Thread instead of Forum is preferable. The HF thread, for example, is useful to many and didin't need a new forum.

I disagree respectfully ...the HF thread is so long... I will not be reading the whole thing. I would like to find the parts that I'm interested in quickly. Now say that HF had a forum, I can look at the thread titles to find the ones that interest me... hopefully less than a couple hundred pages long.

Also, threads can be problem specific (if people title their threads correctly) the HF thread is so long you may have one guy answering one question but someone else thinking it was a response to another one question in the same thread...

BTW, if you do start a thread on electrical - start a new one, don't add to this one!!!! This is *about* interest in the thread. :2cents:

After being on these forums for years . All the homeowner or equipment owner wants to know is for free to put the red wire on terminal 1, white wire on terminal 2 etc and that it works. They don稚 give a rat痴 hairy bum if the wiring is safe and proper. As long as the job is cheap, quick and easy. Then they forget all about it .

I agree on both your points. Trying to keep EE thread organized making it easier to research (see post #36) and this thread is about interest in a new EE thread, not war stories that have started cropping up to distract from the question at hand.

Here is what I envisioned.. take it for what it is worth.. Your average homeowner is either a do it yourselfer, or not. By the very nature of this forum, most are.
I would much rather have a question answered by those " in the business" than somebody that pokes with a screwdriver occasionally.
It's better to know why something is done a certain way than get hurt guessing.
I was hoping for others input on how to structure the thread, and then have general questions addressed by those
" in the business"
My background is industrial electrician, so some residential wiring questions are not my area. Feel free to run with it if you have a good idea.
