14-2 with ground would be fine here since no neutral is needed on a purely 240 fixture. --- I would be marking the Romex on both ends as a 240 circuit.
Anybody know acceptability and conventions for this?

I tape the white wire with a band of Red Tape... so it is not seen as being neutral.

I spect he used 14-3 rather than 14-2 because it's already colored r-b-w ,no farther marking needed.
Yeah ... a wasted wire though. -- If I did that Id probably double up the red and white on one pole of the breaker to take advantage of all the copper to reduce voltage drop.

Sme localities specify #12 conductor on all 15 and 20 amp circuits unless purely a lighting circuit.

In my neck of the woods an inspection is not required IF you do not change anything. If you are just making repairs or swapping a breaker panel/meter base to the same thing, just newer an inspection is not required.but if you change to different equipment (200 amp service to 400 amp,add circuits, major renovation, etc) the county inspector has to approve it.This is just my area, may be different elsewhere.

To be honest, I wasn't 100% sure the thermostat wasn't 120V, so I went the extra mile and bought 14-3. Yes, It is accepted practice to tape a color on the wire to designate hot or neutral. I generally don't like doing that, because most homeowners won't know what it means. Three way switches stand out for me as one of those things that will get you in trouble in a hurry.
Where I am, the code is the only requirement.

hooooo.....boy... You already lost 120 volts, whats a few more??? Correction... I re-read your post, and realized you used the black.. Pretty sure parallel wires on a breaker is a no-no code wise... 310.10..with a couple of exceptions..

This is new construction, House and S/E already inspected, Garage, Breezeway and Pole barn next. I ran 2/0 to the house, 4/0 to the pole barn, and 6/3 under the slab to garage in a sleeve.
