Bob, I agree with the car analogy (sp?), however when I park my car, I don't leave the keys in the ignition, doors unlocked and engine running.

All about precaution (sp?) )

There are 1001 reasons why people should have a gun safe, but lets go back to the car analogy for a moment. You park the car. You lock it. You walk away with the key. It gets stolen.

Now look at your house. You have a lock on the door. Probably a deadbolt too. So it is actually double locked. Is that not precaution to protect your goods? Be those goods guns, jewelry, electronics, cameras, stamps or coins . . . are they not locked up when you lock your doors? Add a dog. Perhaps an alarm. At what point did you take enough precaution? And what if your long guns are beautiful guns that deserve display? Or perhaps have some family sentimental value. . . do you really want those hidden in a safe in the back of a closet or down in the basement?

I'm not trying to argue, just to present some reasons why every gun should not be locked away behind hardened steel.

I have expressed my opinion, as well as my disagreement with yours, without resorting to sarcasm [( Guess what, I've found that you can actually put other things than just guns in a "gun safe"/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)] or any personal aspersions [( Hey, if your stuff is crap, let somone steel it. )]. I expect the same from you.

Lower than a thief? Yes, and we are seeing it around the world a lot. Blowing innocent people up, raping women and children, and a whole lot more.
But, IMO, we as a Society are letting it happen.
You are getting scolded for leaving your guns out where they could be stolen. More and more we are told to change our ways so these people won't be able to get our things, figuring they will hit on someone that is easier. Hassle the victim, not the thief.
Two men broke down on the highway, and a passerby stopped seemingly to help. The two were robbed at gunpoint. The Highway Patrol said these two men should have been carrying a cell phone so they could call for help. Hmmm?
I think it is disgusting that your privacy was broken into, and your things taken. Just one notch 'better' than had your wife been home at the same time and been raped by the thieves (that was once my sad experience in my home by a guy who had a record of doing this and was let out of jail twice already for the same thing).
We protect too many thieves, IMO.

I don't care for house dogs but this is why my dogs are inside while I am gone

Bob

If you look at my first sentence from my second post per this thread, I do happen to agree with you and everyone else here, that a person is not responsible for any firearm or action taken with that firearm that was stolen.

I realize that you cannot be held accountable.

For what it's worth, not ALL of my firearms (handguns) are kept in my safes. They will serve me no purpose "locked away" if I need them, however, they are HARD to find and am pretty sure (actually know for a fact) that anyone inside my house would not find them.

Your right, at what point are enough measures taken to "secure" your belongings?

From my perspective, since a majority of my firearms are "assault rifles", it is important to me that they are VERY secure from anyone other than myself.

I also happen to have some very sentimental "stuff" in the safe as well that has very little value, but very important to myself.

There are bad people in this world, you just have to be prepared.
