Thanks for the input.I'm glad I asked, since it seems pretty much unanimous that the BH6000 is too small for my application. I've been corresponding with one small equipment dealer who sounds as if he can get me a BH70x for a reasonable price, but doesn't think my LA402 will lift it off of his trailer. He comes from some distance away, so I would want to make sure that I'm capable of unloading it before ordering. I also have a 2 ton engine hoist, but not sure if it will go high enough.Should be able work something out, just have to think about it for a while. Any other ideas? Thanks

Thanks for the info. I've been looking into a BH70-X, and since you have that exact setup, maybe I could ask you a couple of questions.
i) how difficult is it( time and skill) to install the subframe?
ii)is it easy to take on and off with the subframe mount?
iii) did you get the mechanical thumb? and if so does it get in the way when you are not using it?
Thanks again
i) The Kubota dealer put the subframe on when I ordered the Kubota/WoodsBH. Looks pretty straightforward, though.
ii) It took me two troublesome changes before I figured out you have to set the bh on hard, level ground when you disconnect. If you don't, you'll be trying to back in at the right angle until the sun goes down -- at least! If you disconnect it onto a concrete pad, as I do now, ithe changeover is a piece of cake.
iii) I didn't get the thumb, though there have been times when I was log-wrasslin' when I wished I had.

Thanks for the information. If this pipe dream comes true and I actually get the backhoe I plan to mount/ dismount it on the cement floor of the garage and hopefully get it on some dollies so I can wheel it into the corner when not in use. Thanks again.

SO - great idea... I thought the same thing... had these nice little platforms with HD dollies under them - perfect plan... then began the dismount... part of the process on a BX24 is applying some downward pressure to get the weight of the BH off the pins... which equates to a LOT of weight on the pads and the bucket... POP! I launched a dolly shard into the drywall... and ended up with a very un-level dismount... (see previous post for fun on reattachment - and I still had the hoses on!)
My new way of narrow band thinking - off onto solid concrete - back on from solid concrete.

Thanks for the warning. So far I've been setting all my implements on wheel dollies ( made for car hobbiests and rated at 1000 lb each). I thought I could used 3 of them ( 1 for each pad and 1 for the bucket) and then tack or bolt some angle iron in between to keep the relative position of them. Of course this is all theoretical since I don't even have a backhoe yet, but if/when I get one I'll probably have to try it for myself . Seems like I have to learn everything the hard way.:(

I should have asked this before, but any opinions on what size of bucket to get? I had just assumed that 12" would be about the right size , but I read in some other posts where people are using 16". I want to do some drainage ditching and the clay around here gets rock hard in the summer so I thought the 12" might dig easier. At some point I may try to dig a small pond and I guess the smaller bucket would just mean more scoops. Just wondered what others are using on a 7 ft backhoe on a 30 hp tractor.
Thanks

If you're going to spend the money on a BH you should think of getting both size buckets. I'm planning on getting a B7800 soon but do have a full size case BH. I have a 18" bucket and at times it's too big, at times I wish I had a 30". If I was to ever a BH for my hopefully soon 7800 I would like to have a 10" to 12" size for planting, drainange lines, diggin holes for small trees, any time where you don't want to tear up extra lawn. Where as that 12" bucket is great for precision work if you want to dig a long trench or say move a lot of dirt you'll really want that bigger bucket. I have no idea what one would cost but if it's a few hundred more I would just bite the bullet.

It's like the guy says: Size your bucket to the task. And don't worry about whether the bh can handle it. The bucket on my BH70-X is 18 inches wide and that wonderful concrete-ized red-dirt hardpan has never even begun to stop it. Don't know if I can attribute that to the engineering of the Woods BH or if it's because of the good pumps on the B7800. Don't matter.

Fjord When I was digging the hole for my foundation I found the quickest way to dig it was to use the dozer to make a path so I could drive in and out and then use the backhoe to loosen up the dirt. Once loose I would just use the front loader to carry it out. Might want to try that way instead if the pond is going to be of any size. A tooth bar for the front bucket might also be something to look into.

No problems w/dismounting my BX23's BH onto a dollie. Space is at a premium in my shop so stowing implements in the dry requires large implements to be mobile. I guess I'm so used to it now, after 3 yrs, that it seems it makes it easier to mount / dismount. Course I haven't dismounted the BH onto a hard surface sans the dollie since the 1st or 2nd time right after I got it home and decided it needed to be mobile :D

As for bucket size, a 12" is a good std size for my BX23 but I would imagine a larger BH on the B7800 would easily handle a 16". When digging a new trench for a water/sewer line or electric a 12" is great and doesn't make such a big trench but with that said, if one is going to do some serious digging and or digging around existing utilities where one has to work on both sides of the line(s) a 16" gives you more bite for the same effort.
For digging out a small pond (wich my BX23 did w/a 12") the bigger the better and a 24" wouldn't be out of the question then.
It all boils down to what your primary useage is and if it's pretty much everything I'd start off w/a 16" then add another later, you can't ever have too many implements :D and besides it's only your money anyways :D
Good luck
