-38c with -46 wind chill this morning and kids are in school ???

That seems dangerous to me. If you were to have a automobile breakdown, you are going to freeze to death before someone could help you.
Am I thinking wrong here? I am a warm weather kind of guy down here, but that seems to me like stay at home huddled around the fire kind of weather to me.

Winnipeg is not called Winterpeg here for nothing

That's a normal temperature for Manitoba. Kids learn the correct way to dress and behave at an early age.

Either extreme heat or cold can kill, anywhere. IMO, the people most at risk are the ones who've never seen these extreme conditions before as they are often not prepared.

In the Far North, kids don't get a day off school till -60C.

Here is something you don't see everyday.

Tank failure of the LP gas truck at East Chain LP. Christmas day 7 AM.
Failure started at the bottom where the tank fastens to the truck. No
fire but the truck was thrust across the road north into the neighbors field.
Initial thrust would have been about 14,000 lb. per sq, ft. Make your own
quess on how many sq. ft. the opening is to finish the math of total
thrust

at the beginning of truck movement. No one was there when it happened.

16F with wind-chills below 0 here in Idlewild (SALUTE), TN. Way to cold for a Southern country boy!

yes you are correct,it don't take long at those temperatures. It was in the first polar vortex we had -30 temps with up to -80 wind chills and they closed all the schools.

We have had incredible weather here in Arizona, I live up in the mountains at 5200 Ft Elevation and our daytime highs have been in the 60's and low's down in the high 20's to low 30's. Next week our highs are going to be in the upper 60's, heck I have been wearing T-Shirts for the last three weeks.

It sounds like this cold snap with go through the end of the month here.

-36°F this morning (4:30 AM) on the way to work, according to the thermometer on the truck. No clue about the windchill, but there was a breeze, so I'm guessing it was nearing the -45° to -50° range.

I must be missing a step in the math here.

Propane_Vapor_Pressure.GIF

If I look at that graph for propane, at -20C the vapor pressure is just under 2 bar or 30psi.

How do you get from 30psi to 14 000 psf ? 30psi x 12 x 12 = 4320 pounds per square foot. Right at freezing point maybe double ?

BTW, that is possibly a classic example for a hydrogen embrittlement failure, which caused the WW2 liberty ships to break up and sink in cold water at high latitudes.

I guess they never had a day off. according to Wiki: "The coldest temperature ever recorded in Winnipeg was −47.8 ーC (−54 ーF), on 24 December 1879 "

That's still crazy cold in my book.

The Globe and Mail here had a great series of articles on the Arctic in their print edition last Saturday. Can't seem to find much on the website today.... another case of print outperforming digital.....

That -60C number came from that paper. Far North (my term), or Arctic conditions - for them Winnipeg is way Down South ! :D

I remember an old timer I worked with talking about trying to start cars out West, when everthing was carburated. With a V8, you had 2 block heaters to plug in, one for either side of the V !

I thought 14k pcf sounded a little high. I guess if the truck was left out of gear, it wouldn't take much to set it rolling however.

That was a forwarded e-mail attachment with the picture from an unknown source......You're correct 'Remarkable Claims require Remarkable Proof'

I used to run two block heaters in the middle freeze plug on each side of my small block Chev. Just had to make sure you plugged into a 20 amp circuit.

Well yesterday started out at -14F and got up above zero about noon. I had parked my 5045E too far from the house for the cord to reach so I rolled out the Honda generator , fired it up and plugged in the block heater for an hour while I transferred some more wood into the basement. Quite a hole there in the inside pile over the last week. The tractor started right up so I seam to have the jelling fuel problem licked. It's supposed to warm up and snow today then back into the deep freeze. + 8F right now with a few flakes going by so the forecast seems to be right.
