How can anyone get used to -50?

Perhaps conditioned is a better word. Without a heated suit, nobody will stay out working for long stretches at that temperature, so people will rotate out to work for short stretches, then back into a heated enclosure.

Enough good food, and really good gear are mandatory. What surprises some is the dehydration risk in the extreme cold, it's higher than you might think.

Some people can't deal with it, period. I guess it's no different than any other type of work with high physical stresses - while it's not for everybody, some people adapt to it fairly quickly.

I remember jogging in Phoenix at 5:30am - construction crews already working. This is the flip-side of AZ.

The Canadian people are experiencing a little cool weather. :thumbsup: Snowed some last night and today but only about 3". Temps are above zero F and that is a good thing.

I'm the other way around. I can get outdoors early and come up with the heat. Cold, I can get so many layers of clothes on, that I look and feel like the Michelin Man, and still freeze, and get claustrophobic, I'll take 110 over 20, any day of the year!

It's been below zero at night and single digits during the day on and off for weeks here. I heat my house with wood, and I have back problems which made me have to give up cutting my own wood a few years ago. I'm real low on wood, and there's a wait to buy more from everyone I know, so tomorrow, I'll be cutting a bunch of wood for the first time in a while. I cut about half a cord all year last year, and bought another 4 cords. My Husky chainsaw died last year, and I finished cutting with an electric chainsaw. TSC has a Poulen Pro 5020 on sale, so I'll pick up one of those tomorrow and work on giving myself a good back ache. I guess I'll be cutting wood every weekend for a while. I don't mind cutting wood, but my back isn't too happy about it. This winter REALLY sucks!!!!

Wind is blowing about 30mph gusting to 40mph. Temp will be down to -2 F tonight. High tomorrow is supposed to be 1 degree and low -17. It's not supposed to warm up to over 20 until Thursay. I feel for the folks on fixed incomes with no savings trying to pay $5/gal. for propane if they can get it. Schools have already closed for tomorrow and probably the next day. I hope my suv holds out through this to get to work 80 miles round trip. Glow plugs are still acting up on the tractor. This winter is starting to get on my nerves.

My dad and I were talking yesterday about how bad the situation must be for some folks in the north east. Especially the poor. We have been on the western edge of these arctic air masses every time this year. The first couple stayed around a while, but it has been getting down into single digit and teens a couple days & nights a week then warms back into the 50's during the day with night lows in the 30's until the next blast of cold. Last night at 7:00 it was 45F with a 5 mph wind. One hour later was 35F and 45 mph wind. Now we are in the teens and 30 mph winds. Hope you all can keep your houses warm till spring.

They saying we are suppose to get up to 6 inches of snow tomorrow night. We haven't had any since 2010.

I am with you on the cold/heat. Having spent a good deal of time in the cold, I hate it! I can still deal with it by putting on layers but then I feel like I just gained 20 pounds and "slogging" around in the mud or snow wears me out.

I was out setting fence posts in 90 plus weather one day when my postman stopped by to chat. Knowing I was from out of town, he told me that "you know, around here folks usually do that kind of work when it's cooler or cloudy or whatever". I told him that if your neighbors think that you are a little off then they leave you alone, lol! Give me a jug of water to hit on and I can do just fine in the heat.

I've been thinking the same thing, I lived in Virginia outside of DC two years when I was a kid, liked it there.
