Why would you have industrial tires on a horse farm?

Why wouldn't you have R4 tyres on a horse farm? I run R4's on my horse property because they don't cause ruts in the paddocks or on the exercise area.

As to the lightness of the tractor, the OP's 1742 is 42hp, which should be plenty for a horse farm operation where the typical max task would be handling round bales.

He has my sympathy for his run of misfortune.

Wow that's awful! Sorry to hear about your troubles, just glad no one was hurt.

I'm one of those people who have had stellar experiences with Massey products. My 1648 was flawless up to around 600 hours when I sold it, and my 1652 has also been flawless, around 933 hrs now.

Iseki builds these machines for Massey. On the 16xx units (tier 3) Iseki installs their own Iseki diesel, and they are designed with mechanical fuel delivery and throttle controls, minimal electronics. Sadly it seems most of the issues with the newer 17xx units are related to Massey's tier 4 solutions with Mitsubishi engines, as well as the new electronic throttle control configuration, and the poorly formulated hydraulic oil they sourced for OEM fluid.

Regarding the loaders, Massey used to source their loaders from a Midwest company (Soo Tractor, division of Radius Steel). That's the loader I've had/have on my 16xx machines. Awesome loaders. But Massey switched to sourcing their loaders from ALO-Quicke, which is what you have on your machine. If you compare the loader frames between the Soo loaders and the ALO-Quicke frames, you'll see that the Soo frames are more robust and in my opinion, of better quality.

If Massey doesn't help you out (I believe the loader warranty is only 1 year) you may have luck dealing with ALO-Quicke directly... If I was them, I'd want to know about that weld.

I had a similar poor weld problem on my 2007 2310... the 4WD selector fork. $30 part, $1200 to repair it -- tractor had to be completely disassembled. Unfortunately, I was way past warranty, but it still bugs me that it was just a crappy weld, with an obvious lack of heat penetration.

AGCO really needs to tighten up their ship! When I saw this thread title I knew it was going to be a Massey Ferguson thread. No excuse at all for crappy welds in this day and age. This kind of stuff has to be costing them sales, maybe they will start paying attention.

My low hours GC1720 has mostly been trouble free but it is sort of a kluged together collection of Chinese, American and Japanese parts and I think that seems to be part of the AGCO QC issues. If I were to buy another tractor I would lean towards one that is made by a single company like Kioti, Kubota or Branson. I know all brands can have issues and I may be bashing MF but they do seem to have a higher than average number of serious problems like broken structural welds.

Update: After some phone calls for over a hour, got some stuff straightened out. Massey absolutely will not even talk about the loader or any help because it's a year out of loader warranty. Even though I've had non stop problems with the tractor for 2 years....
So my only hope is the insurance I purchased to cover the tractor when I bought it. My first 1742, had it for 20 hours and dealer couldnt fix the surging so they exchanged for another 42 on the lot. Signed papers on switched serial numbers and such. Good to go from there or I thought. Now 2 years later I go to use that insurance and its tied to my original serial number and not the new one. Lots of back and forth and thank you to the insurance company for listening and working with me. They are going to go ahead with the claim. Thank god
So the dealer got back to me with repair estimate. $7500!!!! Loader, subframe kit, hood, grille, and bumper. This dealer has been absolutely phenomenal in helping me with this tractor. They've bent over backwards for me when massey wouldnt even look my way. I moved here a year ago and didnt even buy the tractor from me but they've treated me like family. Clinton Tractor is the shop and if anyone is in central new York, they are amazing.
Still in the stages of getting insurance to call dealer and go back and forth with them so I dont know how long this will take or what the outcome will be. Just sucks that I have a $34000 2 year old tractor that's been beating me up every step of the way. I got new thinking warranty and quality. Guess the quality for me has been horrible. I know you guys have had amazing Massey's and not one issue, it's just my luck to get a problem one. When it runs, I love it.
I keep you all posted on the outcome. So massey will not help and it's all on me to get it fixed. I'm not happy about it but then again, I cannot afford 8000 in repairs out of my pocket and this being my only machine for a 14acre horse farm, I need it back asap

Luckily you found a great dealer and as newbie I have seen posted here meany times that finding a good dealer can be more important than finding a “good” tractor.

Looks to me like the loader pivoted over as it came down and landed on the bumper.
