j.d. mower model x-310. how to bypass switch that shuts off mower in reverse

where is switch? all wires are color coded which is helpful. Don't want to cut wires, just jumper. machine is 2013 with 140 hrs. I just bought. I appreciate advice/ help. thanks. vt.shane

Different JD model for me (X738) but I'm guessing the procedure is the same. I popped out the reverse lock-out button from the dash and then wired a jumper to it between the 2 posts of the switch. This is easy to reverse if you need to (just remove the jumper) which can be an issue if you bring it to a dealer as they are required to make sure all the safety switches are working right (so i am told...). So if you need to bring it in, pull the wire, then put it back in when you get the tractor back.

My lawn is so convoluted and chopped up that I spend half my time making K-turns. That reverse kill drove me nuts as I would occasionally miss the button or mis-time my foot on the rev pedal and it would kill. Plus it keeps my hand free for other stuff like keeping branches out of my face.

Check your owner's manual, that feature may be built in if you know the proper combination. My Craftsman mower simply requires me to move the ignition switch counter clockwise one click. My Cub Cadet is the same but then I must depress a button on the dash. When the red led glows I can then mow in reverse.

I also have a 2020 jd e140 which has a yellow button that you depress to bypass safety, and you can mow in reverse. i fully understand how to make a jumper.
My problem is 0n the 2013 x-310 there is no obvious switch to by pass. As soon as you backup, deck stops. you have to shut off deck switch and then restart. Intolerable. I need schematic or wire color, or location of switch. i am electrically competent, and can use multi meter, to verify continuity on switches, but i do not want to reinvent the wheel. I searched internet, but found no free scematics, or diagrams of switch locations. If I bypass back up switch my problems should go away. I want to say thank you to you all. shane (vermont shane)

Have you not read your Operator's manual? (Download one from JD if you don't have it and familiarise yourself with your machine.)

The functions of the PTO switch are:
Down - Off
Up - On
Lift up further - to Mow in reverse.

You lift past "On" before stepping on Reverse pedal. As soon as you start to move backwards you can release the switch and your mower stays running.
This switch is different to the yellow button on your E-140.

     MXAL46368-UN: Mower SwitchLift mower engagement switch (A) past the mower engagement position then depress reverse foot pedal (B) slightly.
     
   • NOTE:
     If the attachment stops while positioning the machine, return mower engagement lever to off position. Repeat this procedure from the beginning.
     As the machine begins to move backward, release the mower engagement lever and position the machine.
   • Resume forward travel. The attachment should continue operating.
   • Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

To terminals on the deck engagement switch that you jumper together.

Yeah mine has both the yellow button and the pull up on the PTO switch methods available. I guess one of the benefits you get when you pay for the freakin expensive top of the line models... My lawn is so difficult that I needed 4wd, otherwise I would have gone cheaper...

But the point remains the same. Figure out which pins to jumper on the PTO switch and do it.

Wonder if that will work on my wife's ZTR Cub cadet.

This may not help but…
I have an electrical plug under the sheet metal for the F-N-R shifter..
When put in reverse the shifter handle depress’s a spring loaded arm..
All I did was unplug it and now I can mow in reverse..
Took me 10 seconds..
I hope this helps.

Not really sure why the blades shut off in reverse anyway. I don't see the reasoning.
