Sorry for no response. I have been side tracked by other projects that needed finishing first. I hope to get back to the JD either this month or next. Fortunately I have a little tractor that works so this one will be a luxury when I get it running and become a 2 tractor man.
I will post the solution when it finally happens.

This string sounds very much like what I have going on with a 950.
12 Volts at the battery (new a couple months ago) and 12 volts at the starter but nothing is happening when the switch is turned. The rap on the solenoid trick used to work. Now nothing.
Two difference, and where I would welcome any feedback, are I do not hear anything even attempting to engage when the key is turned on. And, the front and rear lights will not come on at all off the battery. Still not enough juice to turn it over or possibly a larger issue?

Nothing electrical sounds like fuse or fusible link. Check for 12 volts at the ignition switch and trace back to battery if not there.

I posted a possible solution to this on another thread, but here goes:
There are two contacts and a plunger within the starter solenoid that get connected to begin the starter operation. After a while, they get bent from the plunger impact and cease to function (connect). You can easily try to straighten them or do as I did: buy a new contact set on ebay. This is a common starter problem for the Japanese tractors and some cars (same parts involved).
A new starter was quoted to me as over $800.
The fix for a Denso starter was less than $12. Took about 1/2 hour to repair.

Had a similar problem at few months ago. Try removing ground wire from the frame. Clean oil and reattach. Solved mine.
