Kubota L3901 & LA525
I have 8 acres that I need to rough cut. I've been looking at the 2210 but just noticed the 790 on the JD web site. I know the 2210 is small but the price is sure right. I think I can get the 2210, FEL, 5' brush hog, and a rear blade for about 12k. It looks like the 4wd 790 is more but it looks like a bigger tractor.

I need to rough cut the 8 acres and do some light FEL work. It seems like the 2210 fits the bill but really want to be sure

anyone have comments on these two tractors?

First, it depends if you want hydrostatic transmission or gear. The 790 is only available as a gear tractor.

That said, the 790 would probably be a better fit for the 8 acres. If you're insistent on a hydro, you should look at the 4115 or 4200 series machines.

Frankly, the 2210 probably isn't big enough...

I own a JD 2210 and feel that it would be too small for your size property. I would go for the 790 if you do not mind the gear transmission. Just my opinion.

as an owner of a 2210 I would agree with those who say that the 2210 may be a bit too small for 8 acres. It's about right for my 3.5 acres. The FEL can lift a lot more than its rated 620lbs but it needs lots of weight in back.

I have a 2210 and for my 5 acres it's great. I mostly use it for mowing with occassional FEL work. Basically my FEL is a real nice wheelbarrow. My next door neighbor has a 790. He uses his 790 for everything but mowing. He works it hard. It's a real worker. I don't envy all of the gear work when he's using the FEL but he likes it. It's a no-frills tractor that gets the job done.

I can see myself moving up to a 4x10 tractor in a few years after I find more things to do with one.

Hi

I also have a 2210 which has done everything I need to maintain about 3 acres. I'm not sure about a 5 foot brush hog on it, most use a 4 foot which it handles fine. I think last time I was at the JD dealer he had some charts on the wall giving aproximate times for cutting an acre with different size cutters. I think my deciding factor would be how long would it take to cut 8 acres with a 4 foot cutter, then you would know if you want to get that much seat time or need something bigger. I agree with another poster about the loader lifting more then the 620 pounds, I was moving bags of cement and had about 900 pounds in it and it lifted it fine.

thanks everyone. I had been only looking at the jd 2210 and the massey 2300 but think I need to at least check the pricing on the larger models. I also think I should check out the Kubota line too.

I'd guess that the jd 4115 is going to be about 4k more than the 2210 and that may be a deal breaker. I bought the land to plant apple trees, grape vines, and the like - my wife wants to build a house. I have to be very mindful of the money /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll check on the prices but I'm inclined to get the 2210 and use it for a few years and then trade up if need be. At least then I'll know my needs more exactly.

The 4110 is a midway machine. The 4115 is quite a leap from the 2210.

so, what is the next step up from the 2210? It's really confusing. The 2210 has 17.7 hp pto and the 4010 only has 14 hp pto. So it would seem the 2210 is more powerful even though it's smaller. To my eyes, the next step up from the 2210 is the 4115 which has 19 hp pto...

I really do want to avoid shifting so I've also eliminated the 7900.

Why can't buying a tractor be like buying a Honda car. They all come in three flavors: dx, lx, ex. It sure would be easier /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"I have to be very mindful of the money "

Then it's time to look used...

I bought my 790 for $12500.

You can find 770's, 855's and other Deere models for well within your budget...but you'll have to do without that back hoe for a bit. Even late 90's 4200's and 4300's can be had for less then $15K...I know, I looked at a nice '99 4300 synchro-shift tractor in Virginia for just over $14K (too big for my needs, but it was nice!).
The 770 4WD tractor (early '90's) should be between $8K and 10K, the 855 a bit more. Also, there are the 750's, 755's. These are all 4WD machines (not all have 4WD, but it was available on all of them).

Then, there are the the larger machines...870, 955, 970...and these are just the Deere models. There are Kubota 2150's and all the Ford/New Holland machines as well.

And although I don't recomend them unless you can turn a wrench..the Kioti's, Yanmar's and (definitely NOT recomended!!) grey market machines.

You do have many options...just got to determine your immediate needs (that is, you can rent a back hoe).

Buying a used tractor has always been my first choice - finding one has been tough. The dealer has had a few but nothing matching my needs.

The guy I bought the land from has a 1949 farmall h with a 6" brush hog. It's a great tractor but he wanted $6500 for it. After a bit of talk, that's dropped to $3000 but I still think that's too much. Here in western PA the terrain is hilly and I'll need to plow snow.

I'm not sure what gives you that idea /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I've had a Kioti DK 35 for going on 2 1/2 years, over 240 hours and it has yet to ever need a wrench.
I'm also the owner of a John Deere 850, and I do have a favorite.(but I won't go there !! You may not like my answer.)

I have 11 acres and the 790 does great.

I think the 790 is the better choice for you, for example today I mowed a neighbors very overgrown horse pasture (very dense 3 foot weeds, cattails, etc). I used a 5 foot rotary mower and maintained 5th gear or 3.5mph without any drop in rpm's or bogging. 6th gear or about 5mph was possible on the lighter areas. I bet the 2210 is great but I think doing 5 foot passes at a decent speed would not be possible so the job would be much longer and more of a workout for the machine. If I drop down to a 2210 and 4 foot mower the job would still take 20% longer. As far as gear slowing me down or being a hassle, after the first few weeks yuo don't notice it and you get pretty quick. I find I can cut as quick as the terrain dictates, the real slowdown is looking out for mower wrecking obstacles /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The hardest thing to rotary mow is the thick overgrown pasture with that wirelike grass. From my experience the RM's breeze trough "woody" material like thickets, thorn bushes and small saplings, the real power hog are those thousands of strands of long wirey grass. If this is what you plan on cutting the bigger tractor is important.

I think the 790 will also give you a little better ground clearance, and a wider base to straddle ditches, etc. If my property was more "lawnlike" I probably would do well with a 2210. As it is, I cover some rough terrain and I think the larger wheels, etc. help.

This is exactly what I have. The 8 acres has all been cleared and is what I call "tall grass". Looks like I should to talk to the dealer on tuesday.

I've 8.5 acres and can do most of what I want to do with my 12 hp Gravely. First, I was looking at upgrading to a Kubota BX 1530. It will meet my minimum expectations to have an FEL and apparently handles a 48" bush hog and will take a PTO generator just big enough for what I want to replace my present stand-alone generator.

Now, I think I'll look at a 4010 with FEL and bush hog, as it is about the smallest tractor with full category 1 3 pt capability.

Think I'll also look at a Kubota BX1810 and the equivalent "B" model to the JD 4010.

Saving up my social security for a year to pay for it, so as not to dip into anything. Starting drawing it this month.

I have 10 acres and I too was debating between the 2210, BX2200 and 790. Because of the multiple gullies I have in the wood, I went for the 790 (higher clearance). Although hydro would make loader work easier, I've learned how to handle it with the clutch transmission. It's a very solid tractor. If my land had been flatter and less woody (lesser need to move logs), perhaps I would have gone 2210. Also financing was a big plus ... 0% for 3yrs on the 790 when I bought it.

I also had a 790 great little machine for the money.

So... I went to the dealer to talk about my concerns about the 2210 and to talk about the 790. He's still convinced that the 2210 will be up to the challenge of pulling the 5' brush hog.

He also showed me a 4310 demo unit he has. For about 4k over the 2210, I could upgrade to the 4310. It looks like it's in good shape and only has 380 hours on it. Is 16k for a 2003 4310, FEL, 7' rear blade, and a 5' brush hog a good price?

Sounds pretty good to me...is it gear or hydro? Price also depends somewhat where you're located, BTW.
The 4300 is a bit big for mowing your lawn....but if I'd bought the one I described in an earlier post...most of it's work would have been mowing (I was looking at it for the independent PTO...it was just too be for my acreage).
