JD 2240 - Fixer\' Upper\'

Well, here's the JD 2240 I just bought in all her glory. Just as delivered. I don't think this baby has ever been washed or degreased so I've got my work cut out for me. I'll post more photo's as I make improvements. I might even get some here to help me post 2 at the same time, before and after. That's my Ford F250 in the back.

Hey Boots, not a bad looking tractor at all. My father-in-law wants me to take his John Deere 60. It was built in 1959 the year I was born. Wasn't to happy about it untill I bought a tractor and know more now about them. Looks like we both have a labor of love for tractors coming up.

I forgot to mention. This JD was made in Manheim (sp?), Germany! I spoke with an ex JD regional Manager and he told me that in 1980 when this machine was made, only JD models over 100 hp were made in the USA, Utility size machines were made in Manheim, and small machines were made in Japan. I was surprised!

I won't charge you guys anything for that bit of trivia.

Nice tractor, Like you said a little cleaning up and some PM and you'll be ready to roll. I like the idea of the before and after pixs, hope you can follow up on that. Congratulations and a Happy New Year.

Try a good pressure washer.

I know some people don't like to use diesel fuel to clean and greasy area,but it does work great.

I wouldn't call that a fixer upper....darn good shape compare to others I seen alot newer.

Well, I worked quite a bit on the tractor cleaning and degreasing when the temp got above freezing, and I changed the oil as well.

In my quest for complete Preventative Maintenance, I have now disassembled the tractor to a point where I have to order some parts so I can put it back together properly. Do it right the first time I guess! It hurts me to have a tractor I can't use for a few days though. I guess I'll have piece of mind when she's started back up.

As a side note, I'm amazed at the availability of every conceivable part from JD, as well as other online sites, not bad for a 20 year old machine.

Fixer Upper? Looks just fine to me. Are you trying to scam your wife a little bit here? Could take hours, days, weeks, months to get the tractor cleaned up and ready for use hon - I'll be out in the shop working on it........call me if you need me.

That size JD is a real workhorse and it will be with you for years to come. My neighbor has had one (a 2240) for 8-9 years that has over 4,000 hours on the meter and is going strong. He's going to repaint it this spring 'cause he wants to pretend he has a new tractor. He does bush-hogging for hire and wants to present a nice image to folks that hire him and figures a new coat of paint will help with that.

looks like the same tractor i bought last May, without the JD 520 fel; so far i've put quite a few parts on it, new bearings in the front axle pivot point, alternator, water pump, hoses, belt, radiator, front plastic piece, thermostat, fuel pump[this one after i noticed @a gallon of diesel in the oil pan];and am probably looking at brakes soon. sure wish i had spent my 10k elsewhere!! its big enough to do anything i ever want to do, but where are the problems gonna stop??? sure hope yours turns out better!!!

How many hours on her and did you notice coolant in the oil pan.

the tach was changed @8 years ago; and don't know if it was the original tach then, so i don't know about the hours; nothing in the oil pan except diesel and oil; now just oil(so far)..i noticed the water pump had a slow drip, so i pulled it off an the local JD shop rebuilt it for $50..changed the alternator to a delco with the regulator built in, noticed the water pump drip while removing the alternator..the tractor starts and runs fine, just with so many problems right off; it sorta makes me leary of whats next!!!
