I really hope it is something simple like that. The wheel did not feel loose or have play, but I did not check the nut for tightness. Since the wheel firmed up when the tractor was shut down I assumed that it was mechanically intact. I am going to get down there ASAP (hopefully tomorrow) and will get back with more details.

Thanks all.......

My 4310 did just that......after I dropped it off the edge of the drive onto a stone retaining wall in a blizzard. The stone wall BROKE the steering cylinder rod. Have you ever tried to get a tractor off a stone wall in a blizzard with no steering? It is as much fun as it sounds. The cylinder was $410. Hope yours ends better.

Mfreund,

Was the rod visibly broken? mine appears intact unless it broken internally.

JD4Life, do you have an up-date for us?

I would agree the hyd rod in the steering cyl is either broken internally, nut came off of the hyd rod or piston seal blown.....

Alright, I had to travel for business to Charlotte NC. I will be back with the tractor Friday AM. I am convinced that the cylinder has failed internally and have purchased a new one (since no rebuild kit exists) $410 ouch..... I will have an update and hopefully a running tractor Friday afternoon. Thanks all for the help and interest.

JD4life,

I'd appreciate it if you could post a pic of the (new or old) cylinder for reference (whereas a kit is not avail), It may help someone in the future

jdparts shows two different cylinders for the 4200.
One (15B) looks to be repairable and the other (15A) not.

Ok so it was the hydraulic cylinder. When I unbolted it from the steering knuckle and disconnected the hydraulic lines, the shaft slid right out. It appears that the piston stripped the threads right off. New one bolted in and it is working great. Pictures to come.

This is good news. Not a cheap fix, but it could've been a lot worst.
