JD 4200 won't go forward or backwards and PTO won't function

I am afraid that with your symptoms, you have probably failed the torsional damper in the flywheel. Either that or the hydro shaft is broken or has stripped splines. The 4200 has no electrical component to make this happen. If there is an electrical problem, engine will shut down when trying to move or turn on pto. Item 3 is the damper, unfortunately splitting tractor is required to repair.

That doesn't sound great...and I assume there is no way to test this theory without splitting the tractor. If it were a broken shaft, especially an internal one, would it grind or bang or something because I don't hear a thing. I should be receiving my high pressure gauge test kit (no one carries anything in stores anymore) early next week and will test the charge pump and hydrostatic pump and go from there. Would either of the components you mentioned have an affect on the readings in those tests? Thank you for the different perspective.

If failed torsional damper, shaft, or splines, you will not see any pressure at the test posts, since the pump will not be turning.

Thank you! That is helpful. I imagine the probability of the hydrostatic pump and charge pump failing at the same time would be relatively low. So if neither test yields a reading; it would be a good indicator that their is a shaft/torsional dampener failure and to check them, right?

Thank you all for the help on this; this is a really valuable group.

You should still see 100-150 psi at the charge pump test port even if that shaft is broken. It comes from your power steering pump. Your hydrostatic pump should read below that, to zero, if it isn't turning.

Without looking at your tech manual, so I'm making an assumption on your model, but that shaft should be live to your PTO regardless of your hydro. So if you do not have PTO either there would be a good chance that you have something wrong with that shaft/plate.

As PCABE5 said. The PTO clutch on the 4200 is mechanical and passes through the Hydro drive (mechanically). I had to split my 4300 to repair a linkage rod that broke inside the tunnel. Nor hard to split, just tedious.i did fabricate a set of jack rollers to make the job easier.20170626_052236.jpg20170626_052240.jpg

Splitting stand/rollers are a must to split. Yours look nice!

I wish you the best of luck with your 4200,mine is the biggest P.O.S. that I have ever owned in my entire life.

Must have been abused before you owned it.
My 4300 couldn't be a better investment for me.. bought new and always performs be it logging, moving dirt, mowing off trees, moving pallets of firewood, plowing snow, winging snow, .. whatever and whenever.

Sorry to hear about your 4200.. what ails it?

Other than a smaller engine, think the frame is the same as the 4300 and 4400..

Don’t know if you have the problem fixed or not, but I just had the same problem with my 3120 this past weekend and it was the wire to my seat safety switch was severed. I Know you said previous owner disconnected it, but I would look more into it
