VTRN, After reading your reply I had to go check my Operators Manual. It does not say anything about free spooling. From what is in the manual, I guess you can take it either way. There is what it says:

Wind (A) [lever in the down or forward position] Winch will wind untill you release lever. When you release lever, it will go back to hold position (B) [center position].

Unwind (C) [lever in the up or back position] Winch will unwind until you release lever. When you release lever, it will go back to hold position.

I really, really, dislike it when the instructions do not explaine what is going on... or in cases where the instruction can be taken either way... Thanks for the help.....

I may have had my positions reversed. It's hard to remember which way the lever goes when your sitting in front of a computer. I know the center is the lock position. When it is in the out position it can be pulled easily by hand. If you have a froward reverser on your dozer it has to be in the forward position for the winch to run. It will not even pull out if it isn't in forward. I'm assuming the PTO only turns in forward.

Mr. Vt Redneck, thanks, Thanks, THANKS... I have a winch that works, well almost. I still need to fix the contorl cable or replace it, $150. I went down this morning and chained the cable hook to a tree and crawled under to make sure that the winch went into free spool and drove on off. There was some pops and grinding for that old cable had been on there for years. There was over 75 foot of cable on the spool. It had a bad spot on it the will have to be cut off but still leave about 50 foot, if I do not replace it all...

Thanks to all......

Being new to this site I had no idea where to post my question, I found this forum regarding this winch so I thought I would start here. Sorry if I made a mistake in location. Here is what I have. As indicated in the "new member" section I mentioned that I had a 350C and sold it to get a straight 450, I too have a winch issue. I need help with adjusting this beast. What is happening is once I put a load on the back and winch it in the band doesn't hold all the time. The lever to the winch is spring loaded, meaning when pushing the lever toward the front it will winch in fine. When you release the lever it automaticly returns to the center position setting the brake or tightening up the band to hold the load. When you place the lever to the back it is now in free spool, the lever stays there and it free spools perfectly. The problem is when the lever is in the center position to hold the load behind you. Very few exceptions that the load will stay there, but as you drive away most of the time if you don't continue to winch the load to you as you are moving the break doesn't hold. I took off the side cover of the winch on the left side as you stand behind the winch and located what appears to be a quite simple adjustment. It has two yellow springs, that hook both top and bottom with a threaded rod type adjustment device. Underneath the plate there is a nut which appears to lock the adjustment in place. On the top side of this plate where the springs hook to there is a hex nut that I would think when moved either clockwise or ccw it would tighted or loosen the band adjusting the tension. I tried to move this top hex nut which appears to be one piece that goes up into a round slot so it could turn. My problem is that when I try to move the nut that is above where the springs hook to, the entire plate wants to turn. Other than having to remove the two springs to take the tension off the plate, pull the bottom pin which I would think would allow me to turn what I think is the adjustment rod, I am thinking I would have difficulty in placing not only the springs back but to get the "T" section back on the brake band. It looks simple, but I am not seeing something I guess. I sure could use some help here. Thank you.
