JD 4600 or NHTC40D

BadgerPhil,

I faced the same decision last year that you originally stated that you are facing now: TC40D vs JD4600. After all the analysis, comparing specs, visiting dealers, haggling prices ... it all comes down to this: which one do you WANT. Both manufacturers make a great piece of equipment and you will be happy with either one (assuming that you do not get a statistical "lemon").

My experience was that the JD dealers (there were 3) had exactly the same quotes, list price. Would not move when I told them that I was going to get a price from "so and so". They did not seem to want to put out any effort to get mt business besides talking my ear off (they were friendly though). The NH dealer gave me a price that was competitve (not as good as others have mentioned on this board) and went out of his way to earn my business. I bought from the NH dealer even though they are 75 minutes from my house vs the JD dealers who were within 30 minutes.

One last note: I did end up buying a 3 pt snow blower from one of the JD dealers this winter. The NH snow blower is OEM'd by ??? and was $1400 less for the exact same blower with a different decal on it! The dealer rep was still nice to me even though I did not buy the tractor from him (and did not quote list price this time).

Rat,
Yes that number is correct. It was made in the 90's and replaced with the Lxx10 series.

Tried to get back re: 4200 question-- 1997 must have been one of the last years for it.
Decision time on TC45D or JD4700 is closing in RAPIDLY. Both dealers were willing to take my offer seriously, JD still has to get back to me. AFter not having a TC45D on the yard for EVER and thinking that it would be coming next week, the salesman calls me Friday night to tell me it will be there today, Saturday. And 0% may go off on Monday. And JD might match the 0% if it's still ON! Always thought I wanted a Deere. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

Phil,

If you want the Deere, then get the Deere! Those of us on the NewHolland units won't hold it against you, we'll just slowly shake our heads .... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Let us know what you decide. Please decide! We will all feel much better once you make your decision and make your announcement (and pass the cigars- a boy or girl). The time, effort, and feeling that goes into buying a tractor is not matched by any other purchase. I think that the only other event that seems to elicit such a sense of accomplishment is the addition of a new family member. Maybe this is why we all talk about and treat our tractors with such fuss ....

It's good to be back on, after several days of prostrating myself on my cold garage floor, with the stains of my late Ford 860 on my face, as I agonized over which GORGEOUS tractor to associate with for the rest of my life-- the JD4700 or the TC45D. The decision is-- the JD4700, by a hair. Everything everybody has said about everything is true (better than average, for our times!!). The ergonomics of the NH are great; I love the adjustable seat, the joystick, the styling, the rear fuel tank, the heavier impact resistant fenders, and it is quieter than the JD. The JD turns better in 4WD, I like the loader better (and it does come off and on somewhat more easily), it has a bit more power, and I decided the PowerRev tranny was for me, since there will probably be field work on the 120 in the future, and only intermittent loader work. I do not like the increased protrusion of the NH 16LA quite as much.
Both dealers were good, the JD salesperson was great. He twice has made me rock bottom deals, he tells me that's the way he does things, and I believe him because of the price data on this board. THere was a nice complete lineup of JDs all the time, while I sort of had to chase down the NHs to test. Bottom line: JD4700, telescoping 3pt, 460 loader, R4s, PowerRev: $24,000. NHTC45D, 16LA, R4's, regular bucket: $22,500, could have gotten it for less, I think. And JD has 0% for 12 months, monthly payments (thru April 30); NH: 25% down, pay the rest 12 months later at 0%( renewed April 1, 2001)-- a wash. Both dealers within 7 miles.
A final consideration is that I can see more JD machinery in the future for fieldwork.

congrats on the tractor Phil. You won't be disappointed. Mine has always done everything I asked it to do and then some. Except for the R-4's I couldn't be happier with mine.

Phil, who is the JD dealer that you're dealing with? I also live in Northern Wisconsin and am having a hard time finding a dealer that's willing to give me a reasonable price. The last guy I dealt with told me 24K for a 4700 with power reverser tranny stripped! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
