We are thinking of buying a JD 5203 for 50 acres. Most of land is nice rolling field and about 5 acres with very large trees and creek. We wanted to get a disk to make it ready to sprig for coastal. The disk has chopping blades on front and smooth on back. Someone told me we would have to hire a larger tractor to disk the field. Please help, we are new to farming and do not want to waste money on the wrong equipment.

Welcome to the forum.
You didn't fill out your bio so don't know from where you are. However, with the newbie questions you ask, I'd suggest also sitting down with your County ag agent, your tractor dealer/salesman, and/or your neighbor farmers. These visits locally will help you get information that pertains to the type of soils you have, and the type of crops you want to plant.

I don't translate the "ready to sprig for coastal" comment you made but think some local help is in order. More details and information here will also help get you some answers.

The 5203 is plenty enough tractor for 50 acres. I have 42 acres, about 20 in pasture, and my 5103 pulled my 8ft set of discs w/ no problem.

How big is your disc? That tractor will EASILY handle up to a 12' disc and up to 14' with some effort.
