Are you sure you have all the air bled out and a good flow of fuel from tank to inj pump?

Was #1 cylinder at TDC when you installed the pump?

going to pull pump and check timing again .taking off valve cover and bring to just coming up on no.1.This is stumping myself as well as 2 other local farmer friends. But at lease we get to have some beers together. As the wifes are in the house YUK yak yak.Lolol thanks for all your help.

On the left side, front of the flywheel housing is a cover you remove (Key 5) in the drawing. There is a hole in the flywheel for a pin. That is to hold the engine at TDC. I think it also is for a flywheel turning tool.

Ty y"ll for the come back.Ok the help is growing I had 5 local farming friends trying to get this tractor started.By the end of the day we are all stumped.WE are going to remove injectors and test.We have fuel to them.We think all injectors are clogged, but none of us believe all three would be clogged, but we are running out of opps. This is the story:NEW parts -injector pump, new starter, alternator, all new filters and seals on fuel system.Bleed system fuel up to injectors.No.1 at start of compression stroke ,pin in fly wheel.fires right up with ether,The end.wont run on the fuel.im hoping the injector pump is not pumping rihgt psi.its just been all rebuilt.so we are all at a stump???any ideas would be wonderful!!

I think I would change the injectors if the tractor has lots of hours on it. The injectors are not too expensive as I recall.

Another thing I would look at on the older Deeres' are the return fuel line connections. If you have the rubber lines and tees connecting the injectors you might want to replace these too. I had a line crack many years ago on my 450B dozer and started a fire with the fuel leaking on the exhaust manifold. Caught it right away so no problem but it did wake me up.

I sold my 820 last year but will say it was a good tractor and treated me right.

Did the idler gear have marks aswell ? Dont think so ? then timing must be timed by using a tool made like a Y with the bottom leg long ! Turn no 1 to TDC and hold the Y on the crank and get the marks on the camgear under the long leg of the Y. Do the same for the inj pump gear . Now slide your idlergear inplace and tightern .

I've never seen the Y timing tool required just to R&R inj pump on a JD 300 series engine. Utilizing Y timing tool requires removal of frt timing gear cover.

OK we pulled off pump and shaft to flywheel broke.have never seen this before. How a shaft going into injector pump could break like that unless pump key wasn"t in.Sending pump out to be checked, hope we didn"t damage pump.Myself thinks my friend din"t put the pump on correctly ,turning motor over caused the key to fall in keyway in pump.and the sudden jerk ,broke the shaft. But thats my thinking.

Broken inj pump shaft usually indicates seized head & rotor in inj pump.

Found out the hard why what happened. All three injectors were clogged causing high pressure in pump.Which in-turn locked-up pump, breaking shaft.Well learned the the hard why,but learned. So seent out pump again and new injectors. And found pump shaft, looks like that will be fun changing. But we went thru tractor everything else looks good.So thaks every one for the help will let y"ll know out come soon.Just won"t be able to bush hog down near the creek.

The only bad thing, with Jd is they change designs.in the same year or run.the 820 3 cylinder. Has 4 6 volt battery.but it's a 12volt system.changing over to one 12th battery.changed generator'"to alternator. Changed regulator.is there anything else?? To make this charge.? Ty for Ur help.

Four 6 volt batteries were on a 2 cyl 820 not 3 cyl 820.

I was confused too when 3 cyl was mentioned. But there is a Utility Deere 820 with 3 cyl.
Besides google showing links, here is a TBN link as well. They are not the big heavy 820 2-cyl tractors of the 50's.

I for sure would not be trying to start such a small diesel with ether. May be the problem that things are found broken and out of time. But that may just be me.

The 820 3 cylinder model has an ether injector attachment built into the console on the right side so I suspect that using ether was okay by Deere.

Then that should be okay if someone doesn't over do it. Seems if the ether ignites when the timing is off, then some keyways may get stripped.
