JD 955

The listing for the 72" MMM does not have a link. Does this mean I can no longer get the operator manual for it?

John Deere Ag - New Equipment: Technical Publications - Publications Search

Also I don't see the Owner's manual in the link you sent. For starters that is the most important one I'll need. Am I missing it there?

Also, my serial # is 300903. I see multiple manuals for the engine guide for instance. 2 listings for the North America Tractor.

I also entered the part number and title for the MMM here and got no hits.

TITLE: 72-Inch Mid-Mount Mower - 855 & 955 Tractors
part # : OMM93936

Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry for the bad intel...I did not look into it further after I posted the link. At least you have the part number-hopefully a dealer can get them for you.

They are not very heavy. I used to move my 855 (with loader and backhoe) around on my old landscaping trailer.

Good tractor. I think you will like owning it. You will definitely want a loader though.

The 3pt hitch is on the small side. Only small attachments will work well on it.

What is your intended usage?

Mow primarily, move dirt, landscape, etc. on my 4 acres. Soon I will buy 3-4 more acres adjacent to the 4 I currently have. I have a pond and the other 4 acres will need drainage added.

I might dabble in some small time gardening as well.

Did you like the backhoe on your 855? That would be nice to have.

I will definitely be adding a loader fairly soon. I wanted to buy a tractor with a loader, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on this 955. Plus I can now mow with the mmm that came with the machine. I just bought the property at the end of this past summer, and was borrowing a rig the last couple weeks to keep it mowed/brush hogged.

I have access to a much larger tractor if I need it. I think this will suit my needs for 95% of what I will be doing.

The 955 is an excellent tractor. At 1970# naked, it is amazing that it
comes with a 33hp engine.

They are very reliable, but there are some weak points: the front grille
is hard to get on and off, and does not always stay secure. The PTO
gearcase is aluminum and has been known to break, but you should be OK
if you don't abuse it. The hour meter/tach is in the same guage, and they
fail. Fortunately, they do not cost too much. I found that the front axle
pivot is only a 1-inch shaft, and it is hard to grease. Finally, the x55
series has no foot clutch, so it has lots of interlocks, electrical, and
mechanical. One day, you will not be able to start your tractor, and it
will probably be due to a switch failing. My last 995, I mounted a hoe and
disabled all interlocks. Loved it.

As for loaders, don't forget to check an aftermarket supplier like Woods,
SMC, Westendorf, etc. I do see that Westendorf's TA111 will fit, and
I will bet that it costs less than JD's.

Thanks for the suggestion on looking at other loaders. I will check into them.

I just ordered all manuals owners, parts, technical, and mmm.

I had to call JD directly to order because the MMM wasn't available online. I had them put them all on the same cd. I prefer the digital format.

I say you got a great deal ! The loader valve is half the battle , These are great tractors, lots of grease fittings. I own the little brother a 755 ,with a 60 mmm and a 70 loader. Someone mentioned it before, but a tandem landscape or car trailer will get your 955 around nicely ! Just be sure to use some good chains or straps to tie it down

Sounds like the 955 will be a great fit for your needs.

The JD#7 hoe fits the 955 and is a good match. It is wonderful for doing small excavating work, especially in tight quarters. It doesn't have a lot of power though so it is slow going if you have to dig out tree roots. I did a lot of that with mine. The 955 doesn't have enough weight or hydraulic flow to support anything much bigger. The sub-frame mounting works well and is not difficult to mount/dismount, once you get used to it. Don't get a 3-point hoe. They would likely kill a 955.
I dug a pond and canal with it and it worked great. I also used it for doing a bunch of rock work and for planting.

The 955 was hugely popular with local landscapers. It out numbered all the other tractors by a significant margin.
