Glad to hear you are up and running again.
Are you now able to get it into reverse? or not?

And what does "more fun when all four" are on the ground?
Interp that you were a bit quick on the clutch and popping the front wheel. ;)
Yes, snap the clutch in after getting the tractor moving up to speed. J

Stay safe out there..

Yes, had a tendency to pop wheelies last summer. Hand clutch was new to me. Knew about the snap..the ease part was missing. Got it now! I'm a big chicken - don't like tilting or wheelies.

Still having trouble with reverse. I feel like it's just ignorance though? Found a Model A manual on-line that suggested moving the clutch lever forward slightly so the pulley turns slowly to align the gears...try that?

Yes, that technique of easing forward on the hand clutch will let the gears move a bit and align... that was so second-nature growing up with the JD hand clutch that I'd plumb forgotten it.

Get used to using the brakes too to aid in tight turns, and to give traction to the opposite wheel that breaks loose and is spinning.
As well, use the brakes to hold that part of the tranny (differential) from moving while you slip into another gear.

When in gear, pulling back on the hand clutch will slow you down, but when in neutral, the brakes help along with easing the clutch ahead to get gears aligned. Soon it will all be second nature to you as well.

Enjoy the ride.

Mr. beenthere,

This is super-helpful. Thanks for your clear explanations and patience! Appreciate the instructions. We will work on applying the brakes for turning - got the skidsteer mastered, so the basic concept is not entirely foreign. Going out to practice now before I have to leave again.

Do not use the pulley brake to slow the tractor , use the wheel brakes.the operator's manual says so. Salvage yards full of ruined pulleys as proof. When parked and running place the trans in neutral . This reduced pulley bearing wear. After sitting the pulley should be removed, cleaned, inspected and bearings lubed.
A jump clutch is often caused by excessive end play. 10 thou is a good number.
When adjusting the flywheel should have new grade 8 bolts and torqued to 275 lb feet.
If there was sae 90 gear oil in the live pto clutch housing.the new clutch will slip and soon disinigrate again. Often the worn out 60+ year old pto shaft seal between the transmission is passing . The shaft is often worn as well.
The transmission can be flushed and filled with a wet clutch compatable sae 50 diesel motor oil. Fill the pto clutch with Hy-Gard.

Agree on using the brakes, and not the hand clutch to slow down.. saves on the clutch brake pad.

Ok - thanks for all the responses (including those earlier in the year whom I failed to acknowledge... )

We did buy a parts manual but not an operator's manual. Why, I do not know. Will look for that on-line.

This is very frustrating for us, because stuff is always breaking and is old and this is a huge place and was in poor repair upon receipt...and...and....and. Overwhelming!

Thelma got up early and got on the 70 to make sure she was comfortable with the operation by herself. Louise (me) had to leave for a 10 hour drive home, but will be back in the fall.

We promise not to abuse the pulley and will work with the foot brakes. Makes sense not to ride the clutch. You are all patient and generous with your advice and experience. Thanks again!! :)
