JD X485 fuel pump not running

I wouldn't worry about the voltage coming on then off after a few seconds. My Honda side by side does the same thing when the engine isn't running but the power is on. I think it just primes the system to build up pressure but not run the pump for extended time for no reason.

That sounds correct for this system as well... crossed fingers, as fuel pump on order but didn't get transferred to local dealer from sister dealer on Friday as planned. So have to wait for Monday.

Monday came, and fuel pump still not transferred.. so waited until today. the 8 holes in the pump flange and gasket can be matched to the 5 holes/studs in the old tank. When pulling the old pump/gauge out, found that the hose was not connected.. but the pump didn't run.
Put new pump in the tank and hooked it up and it ran.. sounded like the old familiar pump sound with key on and engine started right off. Success.

Will post some pics of the old filter condition and the new pump in place.

Pic 1..The old pump removed showing hose disconnected..
Pic 2. Fuel tank 5-bolt hole with brass inserts
Pic 3. New pump installed that works..

Found out now that the new fuel gauge does not show fuel tank level.. not going to chase that down, as it will likely result in another pump system/kit.

OK great job. So was this the $300 pump? Do you get the cover, fuel gauge and pump as one unit?

Hope you remember to move that hose clamp were it belongs.

Thanks

The disconnected hose was within the fuel pump fuel gauge system.. came out with the old pump.

Yes, this was the $307 fuel pump.. replaces the old system..

This pic shows the hose disconnected from the white hose barb, so the pump just hung off the two wires.. The clamp was just at the tip of the pump outlet..

I kinda thought the 5 & 8 hole fittings would be ok. I just couldn't remember since it was some time since I did one. (Actually did it twice for a customer who made his own bio-diesel which destroyed anything rubber it contacted.)

I wonder if the pump was dislodged upon withdrawing from the tank because the pump must have had contact with the hose to pump fuel for it's working life thus far?

For anybody reading 4 pages of electrics prior to getting this far - The purpose of the electrical testing & diagnostics was to avoid the possible need to remove the seat, seat base and platform to access the fuel pump unit, which would be the last resort.

Doing the simple and accessible things first, checking fuses, relays and connectors may well have found a problem which was simple to repair. That 'beenthere' had to go all the way to the fuel tank was unfortunate but never unexpected.

I still wonder about the '2-second' comment from another poster. I think this pump isn't pressure sensitive and just pumps continuously when the key is 'on'. It relies on fuel passing through to keep it cool.

Do you think that filter sock looks very clean or clogged? (Hold it up to a light).

For the fuel gauge issue - if you removed the new sender unit (and pump) you could move the float arm and monitor the instrument panel gauge to see if it is sticking?
Ohm's measurement across the sender unit with multimeter will also be a good test. (I hope you still have the seat platform off?)

Thank you, and others, for your help and following this along with advice.
The seat and deck are back on.. my fault for not checking the fuel gauge before putting the parts back on.. was excited that the pump ran and the engine started.
But likely I will, (when time permits and I get more intolerant of the fuel gauge not working right), take the seat and fender deck back off. Struggled a bit to get it back on until I removed the inside light socket on the left rear so it wouldn't catch on the fuel tank. But not a stopper to getting the right fix.
Finished in time for the roofers to replace roofing on house and shed starting tomorrow, as a result of hail damage. Then deer hunting season, and then whatever comes along.
Great to have the X485 running again.
About the hose coming off the pump, puzzles me too but lifted it out of the tank carefully but must have caught the pump on the lip of the tank and it was just barely hanging on by the tip with the misplaced hose clamp. Agree it wouldn't pump any pressure to the engine if hanging loose..
I'll look closer at the filter sock and report the findings.
The fuel pump seems to be pressure sensitive.. but that needs more research on my part.. if the carb screw is turned out to let air out (routine to bet fuel through the pressure line) it seems to pump until that screw is closed.. again more observation is needed on my part.
Empty pockets now, but will recover.. :D

(Glad you added the 'others')

If you haven't already discovered - Removal of the fuel cap aids the fitting of the Fender Deck as well as taking the light bulb and holder out of the light fitting.

I think you'll hear the pump running when it's pushing fuel but when the fuel flow stops the pump continues to run albeit 'dead-headed' so it just quietly putters away until the pressure releases and it can move fuel again.

Delighted for you to have the machine back in action anyway.

Yes, still interested in the filter sock.
