JD450 to make driveway & house pad?

Here in Michigan I had a co worker put a drive thru a wetland and it took a year for permits. He couldn't dump the black muck on his own property and any sand hauled in had to be inspected. He had 40 acres and gave 5 to his son and put the muck there to dry then hauled the fill from the back of the property. Went from a 50k drive to a 10k one. The inspector was not impressed but knew he had been had. I love it anytime an inspector gets what he asks for.

In the end he sold the dried muck for twice what it cost for the drive.

I had a wetland issue in California concerning a salamander that might have existed on the property. One was never found and no evidnece that they ever existed, but since the issue was brought up by the Park District, it bacame an issue.

I moved to Texas to get away from the burocrats that create issues on peoples land to keep themselves employed.

Austin is probably the worse place in Texas to develop anything. And now that the wetland issue has been brought up, your screwed. Sorry.

Walk away from the whole deal, there is always another one out there, and when you find it, it will be a better one.

I'm using a JD 450G dozer right now to shape some roads and clear brush. It's way too small for what I'm using it for and your project is just not possible with such a small dozer.

Good Luck,
Eddie

Well I am glad that the property is not in Austin if it is so bad there. The property is in Austin County whereas the city of Austin is in Travis County. The property is closer to the city of Houston than it is to Austin.

I have attached a low res reduced image of the latest version of the plans to be submitted to the US Army Corp of Engineers. I will let you all know how it goes.

Thanks,

The COE (Army Corp of Engineers) did a site visit today and gave the OK for our plans. They said that where I want to build up the dirt is not in a wetland and therefore outside of their jursidiction. They also said that we can dig fill from the adjacent wetlands with an excavator.

A JD 450 is pretty easy to learn to use ,but it can take a long time to develope a good eye for leveling a pad and learning how to build a road correctly . I agree that a JD450 is too small to really do a good and quick job on a project of that size . More than likely you are going to have mechanical issues with the tractor before you are done . Tracks and rollers and rails on a 450 are not cheap to replace! I can see a friendship on the line, before your done . At $95 a hour for a heavy equipment mechanic to repair it will run your job cost outta sight and ruin your friendship with the tractor's owner too . Also a JD450 is a old machne , so it is not like running a new one .I would seriously consider having the /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifcontractor ,who gave you the bid put it all in . That is a cheap price . Go make money at what you do best and let the experts put your road in .It will be quicker and better . If it fails it will be the contractors responibilty to repair it ,not yours .
As far as fuel use ,it depends on how hard you are pushing the machine . I would figure 15 to 25 gallons a day , but that will not give you a real figure of your overhead cost as dozers need more than fuel to run and are serious money when they need up keep and repairs . I have owned a couple of JD dozers . The last one cost me $16000.00 in repairs when I decided to tune it up and rebuild the track system /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif . That $7800 bid will look cheap if that happens to you .
Good Luck ,

$7,800 for the job sounds pretty cheap.
Is your contract set up not to exceed a certain amount?
My 3,500 foot driveway to my new house seat wound up going through the roof due to an unusually wet season last year and some very destructive mudslides this last November.
I'll post a couple of "before and after" shots of one spot where the road base collapsed (it's since been fixed, but no "new" pics yet. can't seem to locate my digital camera /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif)
