Greg_g, will add cleaning up the negative lug on the frame to the list. I looked at it a while back and saw some rust where it looks like they scraped away, but, the connection itself looked good and was very tight. I am still going to sand and clean this. Believe you had in another post to put a little heavy grease on to help fight the corrosion, will do that as well. I'm going to look for a battery tomorrow and try to get that in.

Who would perform the bench test? Is this something any mechanic could/would do?

Agree with the comments on the solenoid as well from "tat" and Bruce. May try to take the solenoid apart this weekend and see how it looks. Will get some pictures if I tear into it. I am hoping a new battery and going through the connections will resolve and give me good reliable starts. However, this clicking has been going on for a while and if a low battery is the culprit, well, as was said “the damage may be done”.

Thanks again guys.

Happy to report I am back to tractorin'

I replaced the battery yesterday afternoon and she's started up now several times reliably. Found a killer deal on an Optima "yellow top" battery and went with it. Was looking at the interstate batteries like greg_g suggested when I found the Optima's on-line and read nothing but good things about them.

Could get them at remybattery.com for $115 - best price I found on the net. Could get them local for around $120. Called around Thursday and finally found a store that had them but it would be next day before it came in from the warehouse. I Asked if I could pay over the phone with credit and they said no, had to come into the store and pay – thought kind of lame but went along; not to fond of this auto parts store, a national chain, but advanced along to the other side of town to order.

When I got to the store, could not find anyone to help me – as per usual. When someone finally did offer to help I was told they do not carry Optima batteries and they had never heard of them.?? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif?? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif? I politely told this person I was looking for “jim” who I talked to this morning, Jim was busy, so he would help. Another person overheard our conversation and said they carried Optima’s. He looked them up told me they were not in the Warehouse. I asked how long it would take to get there and he said he did not know. Could be two days, two weeks maybe a month, they had no way of knowing. I mentioned the conversation with Jim earlier in the morning. They found “jim” who checked the inventory and oops, sorry sir, I made a mistake. I know these things happen, people make mistakes. I told them I understood. They told me I could go ahead and pay for it and when it came in they would call. I said no thanks and put pack the 10 gals of 80/90 gear oil I had, and left.

Decided to order on-line and headed back to my office. Along the way I passed an Auto Zone. Didn’t call there but decided to stop just for grins. I walked in, got help within a couple of minutes. They did not have the D-51, but had the D-34/78, but, I thought this was WAY overkill and did not want to spend almost $160. The lady (yes lady) I was working with was very knowledgeable and going out of her way to help. They did not carry the D51 and could not order it as it was not in their inventory. She recommended other batteries similar to the D51, but, I just did not feel right. After a few minutes she left and came back and asked if I would buy the D34/78 if they took 15% off. I did the math in my head and compared it to the cost of the D-51 with shipping from on-line. For another $20 I could have the D34-78 and take it home TODAY. Thought this might be too good to pass up, was more than I needed, but, you never know.

Was very impressed – Auto Zone will now have my business. Asked what oils they carried and told them I would be back in a few weeks to get about 20 gallons (50 hour service coming up). I will be getting my parts and accessories from there from now on – a little customer service and help goes a long way….

Anyway, just wanted to give some appreciation to Auto Zone.

I got the battery installed. I took off the negative lead bolted to the frame. I ground down to polished metal where the connection was made. It looked good, but, went ahead and “polished” it up anyway. With the battery not hooked up I took the leads off of the solenoid, cleaned up with some wool and med sand paper – they all too looked good. I then put everything back together and tightened down real good. I then coated the battery terminals, and frame connection with AGS gel to help fight corrosion and aid in conductivity (so I was told). The stuff is like Vaseline. All battery cables were attached and I connected the negative lead back to the frame.

I then hopped in the seat, said a prayer, turned the key. She fired right up without hesitation and strong. I have started her up several times since, and the engine turns over very strong on the first crank. So, I think I am alright for now. I want to tear down the solenoid at some point and look at the metal plate as tat2z1969 mentioned.

As always, thanks to all. You guys have no idea how much I appreciate the time and interest you have shown in helping this greenhorn. Really fun to get to know and correspond with everyone via PM.

Take care,
Eddie

I know that Optima is made by Interstate Eddie, but I'm afraid that 720cca is going to disappoint you come winter. Unless it's a three season tractor, then it may work out IF you're faithful to the compression release.

Personally, I'd never put a "car battery" in a diesel tractor. I've got an Interstate type 49 in my Mercedes turbo-diesel, and wouldn't put that in a tractor either. Like I said, the Type 93 is a 49 on steroids. Too bad you didn't price the 1000ca type 93.. Got mine for less than that D34/78

I hate I missed that! I looked but could not find - should have PM'd you. Live and learn. I saw where some people were using the D51 in their tractors and thought this would be a good fit. The D51 was even less CCA, believe 500. Once again, should have PM'd

I'm thinking (maybe optimistic) that I should be alright. It really doesn't get that cold around here. Not sure if we ever got into the single digits at all last winter. Not planning on doing anything with snow - we rarely ever get any /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Should have paid more attention - I was just anxious to get back on the tractor. Will wait and see how this turns out.....

That Optima battery will be fine in that tractor. People overestimate the battery that comes in them. They are 600cca at best, when new,and proboble drop to the 400 to 500 cca range after a year. I'll put my load tester on one this winter and verify. That's why they put a compression release on there. So that after they drop you can still start the tractor. I start a 75 hp Ford tractor in 20 degrees with a 850cca battery and no compression release. Its a Truck/Van battery and it has lasted longer than the big 1000cca oem battery. From my experiance,Truck/Van batteries are fine in these 3 and 4 cylinder diesel tractors, and that vibration resistant Optima should be even better.

Hey Fellow Tarheel,

I'm over near Roxboro and am looking at the Kama brand.
Where did you get your Jinma? How's it holding up?

Thanks,
Kevin

You do know the difference between CA and CCA right? Or was that 1000cca a typing error ?

Don't know from whom or where you got yours, but my JM254 OE battery was a 12v/840CCA, and my KM454 came with a 12v/890CCA (or 1340CCA if equipped with two 6V). I abandoned both OE batteries for cause, putting a 850CCA/Type 31 in the Jinma (big mistake because of the high profile) and a 850CCA/Type 93 in the KAMA. Now consider that the three cylinder JM454 in question has a rather large 105cm bore, and might not even have glow plugs (I know my direct injection KM454 has none).

The OPTIMA WEB SITE lists the D34/78 as only 750CCA. Plus - unlike the Type 93 - it's one of those high profile batteries that can impede airflow in hot weather. Based upon my own year-round usage, I'd predict that the Optima won't survive its warranty period.

Hi Cowboy and Greg,
Thanks for the info. I thought the "yellow top" battery was comercial. It had high (I thought) CCA, deep cycle and with the vibration resistance thought it would be a good fit. That's why I started looking at it and eventually bought it. Too late to do anything about it now - just have to wait and see how it all goes.

I do not use this year round much. Like I said previously, not sure we got down into single digits last winter. Besides, when it's that cold, it's time to sit inside by the fire with a warm bowl of Chili, my girls, the dog and a good book or movie /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
