Dougster, before you wander out for parts, keep in mind [without getting into any argument or heated discussion], that while most pillow blocks have zerk fitting or places for them, the bearings installed in them may or may not be greasable. [[ end of message ]] Now on a lighter side, if you want to do something that will maybe extend the life of your feed roller driveshaft....some people have tapped and installed set screws on the female ends of the driveshaft to keep them seated onto the male ends of the feed roller and cheepo disengagement divise. I used 1/4-20 by 1/2" Unbrako's [good ones], which are a hair on the long side. The ends tap fairly easily. I also tapped the driveshaft itself [there is a hole already there] and put a zerk into that, too. I use US zerks, and I think they are a tappered 1/16" pipe thread, but I have always used a 1/4-28 drill and tap. The threads arn't right, but the zerk screws in tight and 'works for me'. [don't have the right tap] That said, the shaft is hardened differently than the drive ends, and is extremly hard to tap, but I did it. If you look at your PTO driveshaft that came with the unit [or your trucks driveshaft], you will notice that the universals line up with each other on each end, or phased. I don't know if this little wobble type of driveshaft has to be phased, but take a real good look at it before you take it out. Once out, it's fairly easy to dissassemble it and warsh it out [get rid of the cheepo grease]. There are small wire snap rings in each end that keep the knuckles into the flex joint, and can be taken out with a small screwdriver, awl, or whatever. When you clean the shaft, there is a hole completly thru the center, and you have to clean all the old stuff out of there. After assy., I pumped it full of good WallyWorld Mobile 1 synthetic lube. I also [from mod post info] installed a 42" equipment belt [came with cheepo 40"] and moved my gearbox back about 1" to help keep the angle down on the driveshaft a little. You have to cut off the stock adjusters, but it fairly easy to tighten the belt by putting something [ I used a tapered drillpress tool ] in the slots. I may help me get a few extra days out of it before I can fab up a real driveshaft with universals [ more mod post info ]. Here is a picture of the driveshaft with zerk/set screws/& plastered with Mobile 1. And also a picture of my genuine copy of a copy of a Jinma 7 1/4" skid [ I needed 7 1/2" to line up my PTO and keep unit from tipping when not attached to my tractor ].
Holy Cow Jerry!!! More info than I can digest in one reading while the chipper is still out there on the trailer covered and in its crate!!! :D Mama Mia!!! Remember you are at least a full week ahead of me on the "Chinese Copy of a Chinese Chipper" learning curve!!! ;)

I'm printing all this info out (including pix) and will try to sit down and understand it all once I become more familiar with the machine.

I replaced my roller feed belt tonight, original started slipping really bad last night. Have maybe 6 or 7 hours at most on the chipper, just unloaded it last Sunday for first use.

The belt had rolled sideways on the pulleys. I was warned of the "Chineese" rubber in the belts. I noticed the label on the original said Green Elephant, wonder if Napa carries that brand?

Green Elephant! Official fan belt of NASCAR... yes??? :D

Quick initial report on my new Jinma: Got it off the trailer yesterday and inspected it. Lots of shipping damage due to parts that weren't wired down well enough and broke away during shipping. Mostly just paint damage... LOTS of paint damage... but also lots of parts dented, bent, dinged and metal actually filed right through by other parts... and a couple of welds will need to be replaced. Looks like heck to be honest, but mostly superficial and/or repairable. Metal crate actually bent badly on the bottom while hoisting it off the trailer. Thought I was going to lose it there for a moment. Added two more straps (directly to the chipper) to the already six I was using on the crate and she held.

Overall, I am not too pleased at this point. :( For what I paid, it seems like the Jinma dealer who sold it to me should have at least looked at it before it was shipped to me and fixed some of the worst and most obvious damage... or at a minimum tied things back down so that more damage wouldn't be done on the last leg of its trip. Very disappointed in him. So much for buying from an authorized Jinma dealer. :(

I'll feel better after all the damage is fixed and it is repainted, assembled and working. Anyone know a good source for Hunter Green paint???

If you have a Tractor Supply Company near you, you might try there [www.mytscstore.com], most tractor stores have paint that comes close to real tractor colors. I use Rustoleom sunrise red on all my equipment, and it seems to match the red on the chippers. While I didn't have any bent sheetmetal, I've been touching up here and there while I looksee, and putter around on my chipper. If you build a skid to raise your chipper up, here is a picture of the one I just made for mine. My center of gravity, with all the major sheetmetal and guards on, is about halfway inbetween the feedroller drive belt and it's driveshaft. I made my skid a little over 42" long, and had to come up 7 1/4" to get close to the 7 1/2" I needed to line up the PTO. Of course, my chute is about 58" long in front of the cutter [ask your wife, size does not matter in any way], and I can set my skinny 226.5 pounds on the end of the chute and she just creaks, not even try to tip.

Dougster,

I thought you got it off ebay, or did the dealer just sell it through ebay? Doesn't matter I guess, since you ended up getting it through a dealer. I'd be upset too if I received mine in that condition. I guess you're going to repair it yourself or are you going to get the dealer to make it right for you?

Bummer.

I put a baffle on each side of my feed roller
Kay, got any pics of your modification ?

As for the modification of the feed roller drive shaft "U-joint", I had to replace one end of mine w/ a 1/2 inch impact wobbly.
So far so good with about 4 hrs of use.

Another mod I've been meaning to do is the teeth on the feed roller. Bigger stuff seems to get stuck and not feed.
My idea is to remove every other tooth on each row and make the remaining ones deeper and sharper.
Thoughts ?

Dougster, I releveled my pillow blocks in relation to the ground, and tighted up all the bolts in the base today. I also welded another brace from the end of my skid up to right underneath the front of the main chute. I am getting ready to set the gap on on my knives, and thought maybe this will keep a little more flex out of the chute area in relation to the knife if a large hunk of wood is hanging out of the chute. How are you doing on yours???

Saving all your pix and advice to study carefully Jerry... assuming I get through the coming family "wedding week" alive... but I'm thinking you really did a lot better than me on this whole chipper thing. If I had only seen those Dutch auction listings in time... I'd own a nice, intact 8-incher today instead of a beat-to-heck 6-incher... and paid less for it!

I still feel like the bug... only now, squished even harder than before. :(

No, I am pretty much stuck with it. That's just the way it works with truck freight shipments. Heck, they don't even let you see it until after you sign for it... and shipping costs back to the dealer and then back to me again to make it right would drive me into bankruptcy. No... I'll fix it all myself... and as some have pointed out: I'll use the opportunity to make it even better than it was! :)

My bad luck that things broke loose in my crate. Just hoping at this point that spare parts are available... and wishing that I was a far more experienced welder!!!
