John Deere 2040
My grandfather has a john deere 2040, we replaced the hydrolic pump a few years ago, and after we did it seems not to work right. The power steering is slim to none, and the rear arms are slow to lift even at full throttle. We changed the oil and filter and still will not work right. After spending 1k on a pump we are out of funds with it. We cant use a box blad or brush hog well because of the lack of lifting power, and when it does lift it hard to control.

I recorded some videos

What else can i check? I dont knkw if we should take the pump off and have it tested or it could be something internally.

The front pump rarely fails. I would wager 98 out of 100 front pump changers have swapped out a perfectly fine, working front pump.
When the the front pumps quit supplying power steering, SCV and rockshaft oil. It's is either #1 because the hydraulic pump/valves/screen/filter in the transmission is not pushing oil up to the front pump. #2 Some seal or valve is bypassing/internally high pressure oil back to the transmission sump faster than the transmission and front pump can keep up with.
Is there a reason for the piece of pink hose on the hydraulic line beside the engine oil sump?
Any hydraulic hissing, hammering, moaning or spraying sounds?
Is it when the rockshaft lifts is that what is is hard to control? Spin the transmission oil filler cap off and have a peak inside with the engine running. With the rockshaft lever fully up and then with the lever fully down. Any spraying?

Check the relief screw on top of the pump, if it is screwed in any it will reduce the pressure, if it is screwed in all the way it shuts the pump off. It needs to be turned all the way out to build full pressure. Next thing to check, drain the oil out of the rear end, check the hydraulic filters and pull out the intake screen. This is located under a plug in the side of the bottom of the transmission. It is a suction screen for the pump so if it is plug it will starve the pump. Could also be the charge pump in the transmission is weak, not supplying enough oil to the main front pump.

no spraying in there.. the metal bits looks dry when you peek in there with a flash light... and the hydraulic oil is full by the dip stick.

We replaced the filter... Just by doing little reading... looks like we will need to send it to a shop to have it split open to have the transmission pump replaced. It drives just find just no hydraulic makes the tractor useless.

Pull the transmission screen , not the filter , the screen and check it for debris . It appears there is no front end loader on that tractor. It would not be the first time somebody missed the oil ring on the oil filter cover . A run away oil ring can block relief valves open.

Your tractor has open-center hyd's and there's no relief valve on that style pump. First section of pump operates power steering & rear section operates the lift. I 2nd checking/cleaning sump screen(parts key 30). Slow 3 pt lowering could be caused from rate of drop screw under seat being to tightly closed. When looking for ""spraying oil" were you looking in hyd filler hole behind seat? If the L/D control lever under seat isn't in "D" OR "min" then put it in "D" or "min".

Yes, no and maybe on the open center. Early Dubuque built three cylinder 2040's up to serial #266,750 were open center, closed center afterwards . At serial # 350000 there was a serial number split. Production moved to Mannheim. Then.........there was the turbo four cylinder 2040 from Mannheim that was always closed center.

How much will your wife let you bet ZERO I'll guess?? I'll bet $10 that dajeepman 2040 is open-center!!! Look at the hyd pump in the 2nd video and it will resemble this open-center hyd pump. PS I know all about the 2040 serial number break for the 2040's as I sold them when they were NEW PLUS pointed that fact out to you in the past. 2040 built for European sales had a 4 cyl engine while 2040 built for N. American sales had a 3 cyl engine
