John Deere 2320 Battery

My battery has failed after 4 years, so time for a new battery. The JD battery is 600 CA, side flange mount with vent tube - 22NF group. All the local auto stores and Tractor Supply have the 22NF battery series but less cranking amps at 470 CA. The JD battery, which no local supplier has in stock, has the higher 600CA. I could go to a 51R battery with right amp load, but mounting is an issue (no side flanges NF) and no sealed top - vent tube; so as we move up hills, etc would acid spill out onto platform. Anyone have suggestions or should I stick with JD battery and drive 2 hrs to get one?

My strongbox took a dump on my 2305 (same battery). JD in my area wanted $160.00 for a replacement. Went to Interstate Battery got one slightly more cca's, for $119.00 w/o the side flanges. Just had to rethink the battery hold down. I'm staying away from the strongbox battery, this is the 2nd one (different tractors) just failed w/o any warning.

What is the COLD CRANKING AMPS of the battery you are trying to replace? This is the important spec. not cranking amps. I would try Walmart, Autozone, NAPA, or other local parts stores. Someone should have a battery equal to or better than the JD for less money, or they should be able to order one for you.

The CCA is 500 while the CA is 600 - yes other batteries are available but not with the side flange hold down, so I would have to change the hold down system. The 22NF series with proper hold down flange does not have enough CCA or CA that is available from the local stores.

One other issue - the JD battery comes with a sealed vent cap and vent tube that drops below the battery case - so acid would drop to the ground if vented. They tell me that is important so that when you are on hills or off of center enough to have acid spill out the vent cap, the acid won't vent out of the battery onto the housing and corode. How much of a concern is this issue in your mind. And yes I do have some steep grades - safe to drive and not tip - but cause a full cup of coffee to spill over.

I ended up buying a battery from AutoZone - and rigged up a holddown system that went across the top of the battery.. The AZ Battery has a much, MUCH better warranty than the JD battery and was only about $20 more..
