John Deere X series lawn tractor

A lot of that info wasn't the easiest to find and get strait lol, Kawasaki deff stands by there engines longer than B&S or Kholer.

As far as price goes when buying the engines, that's not a fair comparison, a lot of the time your buying the brand name and not a better product, I wouldn't base a comparison off purchase price, I would find out why they cost more and go from there.

That is true, so when I got the 318, I had visited others in my local area who had them (lawn, garden tractors), so I got to try a lot of different brands out with the owns who had them. (Gravely, Cub Cadet, John Deere, some others I can't remember). Info was gleaned from others I worked with here in town at a major chemical company. That is how I did my comparison back 30 + years ago.

I went from a push mower to a self-propelled walk behind (Montgomery Wards 3HP) to a rider (Snapper 8HP with a bagger) to the JD 318 mowing 1 acre plus. The push mower took from Friday night to late Sunday to get it all done without picking up the clippings. So I reclaimed my weekends and made getting seasonal chores done much quicker and easier.

I started out spoiled when I bought my house, my dad and I shared his 445 for a little over a year, I had 3 acres to cut and he had 2 so the 445 was getting 5 acres cut a week.

Last April got a steer, that took 1/4 acre of mowing off of already fenced in little pasture, I got 2 more cattle in May and put up fence on another 3/4-1 acre by the end of June last year, all 430ft of fence by hand with one of those post ponders which sucked really bad.

Later in the season last year I bought my husky used off CL, a bit of a step back from the 445 but it happens and it was my own.

I have a self propelled push mower also but don't use it much, only places I can't get to with a rider, I have cattle in there now.

So now I have cattle on 1-1.5 acres and the rest I mow, getting cattle cut my mowing down a lot. Now I mow less than 2 acres. With the husky it takes me about an hour.

It wasn't until last October I bought the tractor which made feeding the cattle so much easier, been using round bales ever since all threw the winter.

Thanks all. Pup is still a little young to come home, 5 weeks. I had wife put down deposit today. They just went up for sale yesterday. We have a much older chocolate lap. Sweetest old girl with kids you ever did see. I buried my golden retriever two springs back. I've missed the girl, Annie, ever since.
We went to lunch with wife's parents today. They were going to go look at these puppies they had found. I sent my 15 year old with them to check out the pups. That's all it took. She is in love. Had my wife meet up with them an hour later to help pick one out. No need, daughter had that taken care of. Lol .
Now they are debating over names.
Washer and dryer to be delivered Saturday. One of those broken Samsung recall issues. I've waited too long to take care of this. No pressure from wife. I walked into Home Depot and spied a beautiful Maytag set. I would have tossed them on truck at that moment but turns out they were delivery only. I'll place old units in basement for backup when me and the boys dirty a lot of clothes out mowing. 🤣 Can't wait for tomorrow. I hope they are behind in the shop.

So Home Depot wouldn't let you load up a set of washer and dryer? Delivery only?

And what's that about the Samsung recall? Refurbished?

Sorry to hear about your dog, that just sucks.

We're all excited for you, I would be just as excited if I had a shiny new JD mower on the way.

Great post- so how long have you had your 318? Those machines are tanks!! And remember when Deere used to market their equipment as weekend freedom machines. BrokeFarmer will see, when that husky dies sometime this year or next – he will go out and buy himself a X700 series machine and someday his kid will talk about Dad and his X700..LOL

Keep looking grasshopper- you haven't told me about how each company gets its power rating- nor have you talked about the gross power output throughout the RPM range

It's all there in the post via links, they both follow the SAE J1995 guidelines on power, torque is measured at 2600 RPM and HP at 3600 RPM

Lol my husky will last a long time, it's only got 200 hours on it and I prob put less than 50 hours a year on it. Within 10 years lol. Let's just say I will be replacing it before it's wore out, let's put it that way.

Most likely my next mower will either be a low hour 445 or 455. If I haven't bought another mower in 5 years I would be losing a tractor payment and looking at the x758 or x739, if I was ordering one it would be diesel and 4x4, I would be on the fence about 4 wheel steer.

The 318 I had 30 years, the 420 is 25 years it is at the in-laws, the 420 replaced a Gravely.

If you were in my area, to acquire a unit for 5 years from now you'd need to start looking now. I looked for a year in Northern CA and Northern NV to find a used unit. No success. I found some offered for sale, but everything I found was beat up and torn to shreds.

The brand name didn't matter. People seemed equally punishing no matter what the color was.
