Joy! It works. Took a few turns, just to wind me up, then started and runs perfectly. I'll post a picture of the fuel tomorrow, what a disaster it's been!

Yes it all worked. I vacuumed out the tank again, drained it all through and now it's strictly running on fuel from a barrel! Here's a pic showing left to right 1. New fuel, 2. Fuel from the mower that was biocided from the IBC tank, and 3. Fuel from my Kubota B2150 tractor with its rusting steel tank, that clogged its filter in the middle of it all!

I really thought I'd got rid of the water, but I hadn't.

I couldn't have diagnosed it and worked through and dared to take the injector pump off without you guys so THANKS again! Happy ending, and hopefully anyone with similar issues can find this thread now.

Nigel, you may be on the other side of the world, but as one who also owns a JD diesel Yanmar (X750 garden tractor), I have found this thread very helpful.
I've owned an older diesel boat in South Florida where algae and water is a huge problem.
So when I put in a new diesel tank behind my barn two years ago, I promptly treated it all with a diesel additive.
And since my diesel tank runs dry in 14 months or so, I'm pretty much guaranteed to have fresh fuel.
Not exactly like spare filters left on the shelf, diesel fuel is like a nouveau Beaujolais, it needs to be drunk soon...
So glad you were successful and sorry it cost so much to get there.

This is a huge lesson for all of us to keep clean diesel fuel in our machinery.
My foreign car mechanic says that there is a problem with Bosch injection pumps failing due
to poor fuel, not enough additives? Too much water? Apparently occurring around 60-80K miles, which is not much.

I'm assuming the sudden stop was due to the shaft breaking? Too bad there isn't some diagnostic indicator to say there's a problem brewing
before this seriously expensive part fails and leaves you stranded. Something beyond the red ring, some fuel pump sensor. Though that would be one more sensor
to fail also...

Excellent end result! Good work; it's NOT easy messing with an injector pump without having done so previously. I suggest you give yourself a break on faulting yourself for the problem(s); I'd chalk it up to it being a used piece of equipment that you ended up having to set right for your use going forward.
As a for instance I have what was previously a gas tank, horizontal mount with skid/sled feet. I converted it to diesel, removed the suction pipe and replaced the rusty metal one with PVC and cut it slightly shorter to keep from pulling up any crap that might settle to the bottom. It had and still has an electric fuel pump with hose and fuel handle like at any petrol station. I added a fuel water separator and a fuel/particulate filter to the output piping and spray foamed the entire tank to reduce condensation, etc. Fortunately I'm able to keep it indoors with an outdoor vent. I buy 'cut', (winter diesel fuel) year round, from one supplier, and since it holds 300 gallons it doesn't get filled too often. So far I've had NO issues with fuel, and I consider myself lucky, especially because of what's available for fuel these days.

I suspect you will enjoy using your tractor now instead of fixing it.
Cheers!

CM

CM: It's not strictly a tractor. It's a mower. Lightweight Fairway Mower. Typically as seen on your local Golf Course. It looks a little like this:

Nigel: Happy to be of assistance!
Next you had better get into the Kubota and drain all fuel from its tank. The pics of your old fuel are not pretty.

As an aside, I'm suffering FIP issues of my own right now. My work van (Nissan Caravan) has just demonstrated identical symptoms as your mower. Cranks but no start & no smoke. Unfortunately it has modern electronic diesel injection control with computer modules so it's beyond me and in the workshop as we speak. Am bracing myself for big $$$'s .

Keep in-touch if you need any help with Back-lapping.

Best regards to everybody!

Now I get the recent references to backlapping; I was thinking reel mowers, maybe tow behind like I have a 3 gang Pro Mower combo. That setup looks like hydraulically driven gang sections?
Coincidentally, I just bought a Cub Cadet Pro Z 160S with four wheel steering. It's a ZT, BUT it has 4 wheel steering with turf tires on the front. It's and ANIMAL on hills, wet grass and everything my former Scag Wildcat was not able to handle, slopes, damp/wet grass, etc.

Spanner, on your van situation is there a way to determine, short of pulling the pump, what exactly is going on with it?

Here in the US of A there are numerous good FIP shops who rebuild pumps with new parts for 'reasonable' $ vs. replacement with factory FIP for HUGE $.
There were some problems with Kioti IPs in certain year tractors, where the cheap plastic gears would strip their teeth off and lose the ability to function as designed. Methods and parts for replacement were found and save owners a huge pile of money over factory replacement pumps.
Good luck with your van, let us know how it progresses....

Thanks CM. I will. The Auto Sparky carried out Scan Tool testing and pronounced the electrics OK. It's in the diesel shop and tomorrow I will assist with fuel and lift pump verification and preliminary stripping to access the FIP itself. the local perceived wisdom is the FIP is a repairable item so I hope to be able to get it back on the road asap. Stand by for updates.

These Fairway Mowers are hydraulic everything. HST drive. Hydraulic lift/lower of cutting units. Hydraulic reel motor drives (See the black hoses), Hydraulic 'down-pressure' on the cutting units, Hydraulic steering (Double acting ram) & Hydraulic backlapping. What's left? Manual Park Brake, Manual seat adjustment and manual throttle control - LOL.

Best regards,
