Bob,
I am on public water, but actually prefer individual services. After all with public water/sewer one problem can harm or inconvenience thousands. As oposed to the improbability of thousands of wells or septic systems messing up at the same time. If my pump quits I could still go to the neighbors for water.....Still have my cistern, and use it for outside watering. I would use it for all uses if not for the wife, water from the sky is free /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And I prefer to fertilize my ground rather than having to pay taxes/fees for someone else to dispose of it.
oh well off my soapbox...

Ben, as long as we are that far off topic, I'll have to agree with you! I see no problem with well water or private septic and I suppose it is one more safeguard that isolates me from the public. I chose to live 5 miles outside of town for a reason (or maybe a bunch of them) and the fact that I have a private well and septic can be considered by some a downside. But it is just fine with me. And if an ex-city boy who wears Hawaiian shirts to the office and drives convertible cars can deal with a septic system, then it can't be that hard to operate . . . other than flushing the toilet manually, the rest of it is pretty simple . . . oh yea, I suppose I have to dial the phone every 5 years or so to call the pump truck out to clear the tank. . . I can handle that.

But I do understand that some folks want city water or city sewers (or both) and that is fine.

Bob,
I have never had to have a tank pumped. Went 35 years on the one I grew up with ( family of 7) , old tar and steel tank finally caved in and had to be replaced. And 15 yrs at another home I owned. My current system is about 25 yrs old and never pumped. My parents and I have always used the flush down the toilet bacteria additives (ridx, etc) and never had any problems. Maybe just lucky, maybe not. One thought maybe the chlorine in public water kills off the bacteria in the septic tank and causes unecessary pumping ?? just a thought.

I was expecting to see that you got a preheating oven or maybe a microwave. Never thought you'd be talking crap.

I caught it, I just assumed he was implying that he was SOOOO far behind the times that he is just catching up to being SOMEWHAT behind the times.

Bob,

You get the bonus points because you both "caught" it and "got" it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually when we bought this place, the old house was fed water from the spring that now feeds my pond. That spring head was not done right (or couldn't be for all I know) and after a rain it muddied up pretty good for a while...

City water was available on this road for some reason, so we tied in right away...also, around here, almost NO ONE has a properly functioning septic system, so while I would rather not have an extra bill each month, I prefer a bill to the smell I get out of the ditch behind my pond (during drought periods mainly), that comes from several homes up grade from us... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

With public septic, the zoning density will now go from one family per acre to 200 familes per acre, soon condo high rises will block out the sun and your spring will become a retention pond for the condo associations parking lot.... we are always going to be on septic tank, well water, and 56K dialup modem with no DSL, cable, asphalt, or anything else.

Around here the health department would force you to get the field fixed.

As for that, I do it because I don't want to bet on a failure. I've heard all sorts of stories about folks who never had a problem, and I've also seen folks who have had to replace their entire system because they didn't pump. So I make a phone call, a truck shows up and a guy pumps out the tank, he gives me a bill for about $150 and I never have to worry about it. I do use the enzyme treatments too. I am not convinced they do anything.

That's what I thought, we are still on a well, gravel roads, septic system, but hey, we have broadband, it's not cable, it's not dialup, it's not even satelite. A couple of young guys started their own wireless broadband and it works great. Downside is that it is line of sight of the antenna, goodside is were in the line of sight.

Sir,

I'd pump the tank. Your asking for trouble. If you have some time read about systems and how they work. You might be the lucky one but suggesting that it's ok not to pump the tank isn't the right direction to go in for people who don't know any better.
