Just bought a bush hog, what to look for??

must google....

What he was referring to is the blades are typically mounted onto a "stump jumper" pan with shoulder bolts that allow the blades to pivot some. This is so when a blade hits a solid object, the blade will swing back some and lessen the impact to the gearbox.

"no hardened bolts in shear holes?"

Find out what the proper shear bolt is and use it. You need to get a user manual, good for lots of things. Don't assume that the shear bolt should be soft. Also, don't trust the shear bolt now installed to be the correct one. Some people use bolts too hard, some use bolts too soft. Too soft and you may be replacing it often, too hard and you will be breaking expensive things.

You may have a slip clutch rather than a shear bolt.

$200 is just about scrap price for a 6' cutter. If it works for just 1 use, you got a good deal on it.

If it doesn't have one already, I'd suggest putting in a slip clutch instead of shear bolts. My slip clutch has saved my tractor a lot of abuse but then, I'm pretty hard on my cutter. I figure if I can roll the tractor over it, then the cutter should cut it.

...and if you do have a slip clutch. Note where the bolts are adjusted (measure or count the threads), loosen it up, give it a quick start to knock the rust off it and make sure it slips, and then retighten.

okay thanks!

I won't be using it for a couple weeks, too much other stuff to do, like build my ROPS and install seatbelt ;)

Once I figure out who/what it is I will snap pictures and look for a manual online

So far have been lucky with manuals...I hate the internet at times, but finding manuals for all this old stuff I have been getting would of been a nightmare

Can blades rotate/fold back freely at their connection on the stump jumper?

Xfaxman :drink: that is easiest explanation!

Just like when you were hanging onto the merry go round and your legs hit a friend that was spinning you, you fold right into the merry go round :confused2:

Folding blades are also available on cutters without a stump jumper pan. There is simply a flat bar with a splined center hole to fasten to the gearbox shaft. The blades then fasten to that flatbar with bushings that allow swing.

The purpose of a stump jumper is not to allow the blades to swing freely. It's purpose is to "ride up" over a hidden stump or rock or any other obstacle. Without it the flatbar and gearbox shaft are vulnerable to severe shock from banging against said obstacle. :(

If you have a choice, always choose stump jumper.
