Somebody has to buy new. If not, there would not be many used ones.
Exactly. I'm pro buying used (not abused) for a lot of reasons, mainly, at this juncture, it's perfectly doable to buy a used in good shape pre-emissions tractor with reasonable hours on it, let the original owner take the depreciation hit and smile because there will be no lowest bidder emissions component failures down the road.
Problem with that scenario is simply that as more and more people come to the realization that a pre-tier 4 tractor is a better option, there are fewer and fewer available for sale and the ones that are, command high prices. I know in my case I spent the better part of a year looking for a pre-emissions unit that met my particular specification and finally found one but had to have it hauled 400 miles to get it here and had to put a bit of cash in it to return it to 100% operating condition.
The longer you procrastinate, the fewer there are available and the harder it is to find and buy one.
Like my cars, I always buy late model, off lease cars and trucks. Let the first owner take the depreciation hit. I don't much care if someone else drove the car or truck before me. I typically can buy a 2 or 3 year off lease vehicle (with the balance of the factory warranty and eligible for a factory extended warranty (which I always get because vehicles are so complex today) at a 50% or better savings over sticker price. Last one I bought I got for less than 1/2 the advertised price from a dealer. I'd rather buy from a dealer versus an individual anyway because the vehicles will be detailed and all maintenance taken care of, You basically get a low mileage used but new vehicle.
Tractors are almost the same deal. pretty hard to destroy one with less than 250 hours on the meter and unlike a car, it's also pretty easy to look over any used tractor and ascertain if it has been worked and maintained or abused and dumped.
