This thread is a fun read ,, well, it has been a fun read. I don't plan to read through again though!
I subscribe to several technology type forums, and this one topic is no different than the others. The Scientist claim proof, but can not show any. (deezler) Only the (can and may) or anecdotal evidence.
The deniers camp on the "that is true, but it's only a matter of degree, and there is no real facts available" position.

The absolute worst are those who sit a fence, but comply under the shelter of "this one small concession" . A concession to clouded fear is a fools mission.

Two important things I have heard about this "flattening the curve" /protection thing regarding the Wahoo Flu.

Wearing a mask is like being in a swimming pool. The other swimmers may very well have swim suits on when they take a piss, but you are in the waters just the same.

And on a lighter note.

I've found a wonderful "self test for this flu"

Each evening, I pour out a shot of my finest bourbon whiskey into a snifter glass.
I take a wiff, to check the bouquet, Knowing that loss of smell is a sure sign of infection.
Having passed that test, I drink the liquor down slowly, checking the taste. For loss of the sense of taste is another scienterffically established symptom.

When the snifter is empty, I am pretty confident I have not been made ill by the deathly virus.

Typically I administer this self test 6 to 10 times each evening. So far so good! ;-)

And on an even BRIGHTER NOTE

My state has had but ONE Sars-Cov-2 realted mortality over the previous two months! I personally know ON ONE that has had the illness, and have only heard of two persons who had the disease. those two, brothers in fact, died. One with a long history of lung issues, the other a long history of heart issues. Both obese, smokers, and hard drinkers. Not that that is that bright a note, but without the internet news, I would not be affected by the virus at all. lucky me!

It's funny. In the 50s your Family Doctor might well have recommened smoking. Probably had a fag going himself as he examined you.

But Please. Someone help me out. Beginning of this thing, they say EVERYONE is going to get this, 99.8% will survive it, they just need to flatten the curve to get health care resources into place.

Now, you must't get this at virtually any cost. What has changed? What gives? Is it just going to go away?

Thank You I love Bill Burr. I will have to watch that tomorrow. I am old enough. I don't care to grow old. I particularly don't care to negotiate our health care system. Just put me out on the ice already! I'm sorry. I find it pathetic when the old and infirm, CLING to life. Like burdocks on your comfy hoodie.

Saw Tucker Carlson tonight. As far as I am concerned, he really hit it out of the park tonight.

Since this thread doesn't have long to live any way, I thought I would tell our tale. I am not going to comment on others beliefs or "truths" as there is no point.

In early July the wife came down with what seemed might be Covid. All of the usual symptoms, tiredness, cough, shortness of breath, and the general run over by a truck thing. The doctor says, Yep you have Covid 19, but there really isn't much we can do for you, just stay home rest, and call us if you "really" cant breath and we will hospitalize you. This was during the uptick in our state. About 6 or 7 days later, wife is still sick, and I start getting sick, all the same symptoms but I don't go to doctor. My illness starts to improve in 4 days. Wife is still sick but improving day by day slowly. We stay in. After a little over 2 weeks, wife thinks she has it whipped, and continues to improve, but still tired when she tries to do much and she has lost 100% of her taste and smell ability. Can't taste anything, can't smell anything. NOTHING. Now it is August 14, Wife is good, and of course I recovered weeks ago. I never lost any percent of taste or smell. Wife thinks she has about 40% of taste and smell back, and slowly improving each day. By the way, I think wife got it at church, as many members got it at same time. Our "outside" lawn and garden helper (also a church member) collapsed on the job and was hospitalized for a couple of days. He is in his early 40's and recovered completely in 2 weeks. All of his children were mandatory quarantined for 14 days by the county, and none showed any symptoms.

We are both "compromised" health wise. And we are both "old". (past 65) but we didn't die.

Here are my "thoughts" and "beliefs". I think the only way we "beat this thing" is when we ALL contract this disease and there isn't any one else left to infect or spread this disease. I think that if we totally quarantine ourselves we can stop the spread, but as soon as we try to open up again the spread starts again. What is the point of stopping the spread? Ideally it was so we would not overrun the hospitals, or perhaps we can get closer to better therapeutics or even a vaccine.

I think if we go into lockdown again, the damages down by the lockdown outweigh the good it does in stopping the spread. These are my thoughts and you don't have to buy in to them or criticize them. We are considered kind of a "hotspot" for a small rural county with not a lot of population.

Yesterday I had to go to my cardiologist's office to have my semi annual pace maker check. There is a sign on the door that says everyone must wear a mask and practice social distancing. The receptionist that signed me in put her mask on as I approached the desk. There were 3 other women working behind the large desk and they all had masks hanging off one ear or down around their necks. There were several other employees, nurses, techs, whatever that came into the area and none were wearing masks or practicing social distancing.
This office has not been seeing regular appointments but opting for phone or video meetings with the doctor for at least 6 months. I was really disappointed in their lax attitude since I am in the very high risk class as are many of the other appointments.

It brings to mind the old saying "Practice what you preach".

Maybe they just do not take it seriously because they know it’s not as serious as it is made out to be.

I went to the dentist 3 days ago, and they wanted everyone to show up in a mask, and all personnel were wearing them. They also took my temp with a thermal gun immediately,. All patients even the kids in the waiting room were wearing mask. Obviously when I got in the dental chair I took mine off, and the tech and dentist wore masks and face shields. I put it back on when I went to pay and thru the building. I don't know if masks help that much, but they can't hurt. I suppose and believe that they probably help others by keeping your spit drops in more than they help you by filtering out any small aerosolized particulates. OH, also before I got to the office they asked a bunch of general health questions over the phone, so if you flunked that test, they didn't want you to come in.

survival stats for the CCP pneumonia/

I;m not sure how these numbers compare to Shingles, gout, or falls in the home, but... We do what we do.

James,

Were either you or the wife actually tested for COVID ? (using either PCR or antibody)

survival stats for the CCP pneumonia/

EDIT: Updated with more accurate numbers.

Those numbers are wrong. Look just at the US.

Deaths: 168,000
Infected: 5,300,000

Death rate = 168,000/5,300,000 = 3.2%

So, survival rate is 96.8%.

Let's extrapolate that. If we remove all safety protocols and strive for herd immunity, we need at least 70% of the population to get sick ( https://www.journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-4453(20)30154-7/fulltext).

The US population is about 350,000,000.

So, 350,000,000 x 0.7 = 245,000,000 infected

245,000,000 x death rate = 21,000,000 x 0.032 = 7,840,000 dead.

Now, estimates of the death rate actually put it around 0.6% because not everyone that has it knows they do ( research article can be downloaded here. This is data from Indiana, so I am assuming the US in general will be similar - Population Point Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Based on a Statewide Random Sample — Indiana, April 25–29, 22 | MMWR)

So, if we just let it run its course we can expect:

350,000,000 x 0.7 x 0.06 = 1,470,000 deaths.

That's a LOT!!!

Paraphrasing what my dad always told me, "Do the math." (i.e., don't blindly trust what other post on social media).
