Thanks for sharing the info and pics . I enjoy them I have family in "Pelkie" and Muskegan .......................I could be wrong mistaken but the other day they where telling me about an up and coming smelt and sucker "run" they look forward to "can" ?

Keweenaw shove ice photos

My last post reminded me that we have a bunch of shove ice photos that you folks might like. This is ice forced ashore by wind or currents. In the spring, we sometimes can hike in to where it was really pushed high. These photos were taken in the Porkies state park here in the upper peninsula of MI. Its hard to see the height of these ice cliffs in my poor photos but that year, they were well over 20 ft above the water. The scale of this is hard to capture in photos.

A few details. The 1st photo is an ice volcano. These are made when water that is force through the shove ice and blows out creating them. Shove ice is normally populated with them. In the 7th shot, the dark objects are large rock that came up with the water and spit out. These might be 30 feet above the lake. Ya, lots of energy in this. In the 2nd from the last, I'm on a peninsula of ice trying to prompt our mutt Gromit, to come out with me. She eventually did get out there with me.

More snow photos. This post will feature ski trail grooming in deeper snow falls. In the 1st one that UTV is stuck! Trail grooming is not 100% fun. The Grizzly ATV in the deep snow photos was overheating, when those photos were taken. Let me know if you like them.
