An obvious answer maybe but you tow some kind of device when grooming the trails that make a pair of tracks. I assume that is for the skis to ride in? I assume cross country skis ride on top of the snow like snow shoes?

Around here we get snow on a regular basis but we have had about 20” of snow as the biggest event since we have lived outside of town in 22 years. 12” of snow would be considered a major event around here. I just enjoy seeing the pics with large amounts of snow.

Thanks for the question Dave. Ski tracks are indeed set into the surface in the final process for cross country skiing.. I'll add some photos of the machine that does that. This one in particular is a Ginzu built by Yellowstone track systems in Sheridan Wyoming. We moved to the south shore of the little lake for the moderate temps year around, and consistent snows over the winter. We're been to Peoria a few times. :p

Dave, I've done this for clubs and the city, as part of there recreation department. So I has paid, but its wasn't much. It does cost to go skiing or use the trails in general, over the winter and as indicated below the grooming equipment and operational cost it quite high. If anyone has more questions, just post them.

Here is some implements and roughly there cost.

1st photo drag. $3000
3nd is ATV Outlander with pods $18K
4th is a UTV Defender with pods $28K. Roller behind it $3K, 2nd photo is a better photo of that roller
5th is Ginzu that run about $4K

Gee - Arlyn. All those groomed trails. They would certainly allow skiers to enjoy their outing. My wife, son & I spent many a day cross country skiing in AK. We never had groomed trails. The best we could hope for was some form of punched in road. These, obviously, were never groomed and we were the only people to ever use them in the winter.

Usually some very old roads. Punched in by the USGS for geodetic surveys. Or roads going to ???? - blazed in by the military for some winter training exercise.

How far could we go in a day. It depended upon the snow conditions & daylight. No matter how far you got - better be heading back around noon. Not so much fun skiing in the pitch black. Or coming across a moose who though the road was his. Now that it was dark.

cqaigy2; We actual don't hardly ever get stuck but we do carry shovels in all our machines and all have winches. I carry a camera with me most of the time and when you get stuck, its always a good time for pictures.

oosik; We back country ski most of the time, in fact, we wear them out quicker than all the skis we own. I'll post a photo when I can take one of there storage are. We have lots if them! Here is pod and ski storage..
