Thanks for the memories as I was born and raised about six miles south of Houghton. Lived there for 22 years.
The last snow that I remember was around July 4 on the north slope of a slag pile in Painsdale.
By "slag pile" you must mean poor rock piles? All the slag piles I'm familiar with are at the Quincy Smelter.. Thank you and everyone else for the the kind comments..If you'd like to see more photos from our area, just follow our dogs blog..
Yes, you are right. The ore from the Painsdale mine was hauled to the Freda Stamp Mill by train. The kids from Freda and Beacon Hill rode the train caboose to Painsdale to high school in the morning and back at night. Heh, it's been so many years.
