Just asking: electric or gas welder?

If electric, was the bucket on the tractor when you welded the hooks?

If so, did you bother to disconnect the battery before welding?

I've read TBN threads that discuss the possible damage that might be done to the tractor electrical system when using an arc welder on the tractor.

I used a Lincoln AC/DC Stick Arc Welder with 7018 rod ran on DC. I removed the bucket with the quik-tach and sat it on saw horses. When I weld on the tractor I will discount the battery.

I know the welds look like their not burnt in good, but they are! I have three passes, that's why they look big and lumpy.

My first pass looked great and was burnt in very good, but needed a little more material. So I did a second pass and all the second passes burnt in good also, but looked bad. So I cleaned them up with a 4 1/2" grinder and ran a third pass, mostly for looks. It looks much better but is a little big.

I should try using 7018 for the first pass and 6013 for the second as 6013 flows really well and looks good.

Welded my hooks and chain boxes on with a buzz box, didn't disconnect or remove anything. I did make sure the ground was good and as close to the weld point as practical.

Electricity takes the path of least resistance, don't see a problem as long as you don't do something silly like attaching the ground to the engine and weld on the bucket.

BobReeves, you mentioned not doing anything silly reminded me of a story. Back in the 70's a friend and I raced Husqvarna Dirt Bikes.

My friend was building a set of brush guards for woods riding and had the ground clamp on the handlebars. He had to weld a crack in his footpeg also and he started doing that without moving the ground. Next thing he has the clutch cable on fire!

Luckily it only ruined the cable, didn't hurt the engine or steering head bearings. Needless to say he was much more careful next time!
