If so, you didn't bleed the air correctly.

Not knowing much about diesels, so please, excuse the ignorance. Will air in the system cause an over-rev condition? I can unstand the problem of the engine quiting, but not the over-rev. Remember, this is my brother's tractor so I do not know if he has changed out the fuel filter yet and I haven't heard from him this morning. Thanks for the ideas. Roger

The combo of under rev and over rev is why I thought it might be the injector pump. I ain't no diesel mechanic but based on similar symptoms reported by other TBN members that seems likely. There is a bigger differential diagnosis when it is only stalling or under rev'ing that is the issue but having high revs certainly doesn't sound like fuel starvation.

Possible I'm misunderstaning what you mean by over-rev. If you are talking about the engine sounding like its running away(as in she's gonna blow), then its may be something else. But if you are getting air the rpm will vary greatly as the operator usually gives it full throttle and holds it. Then as the pump finds a little bit of fuel, the engine will rev up, then fall back as that fuel is used up, then repeat the cycle. We usually don't notice any problems while on idle. If you car starts to stall, first thing we usually do is give it more gas.

Good point, I was assuming true over rev'ing as you would get with extra fuel rather than just intermittently reaching normal operating RPM with intermittent fuel starvation.
