I had a thought today. What kind of a small excavator could I get for around 8000. Thats about the price of a BH attachment for the b and l searies.

Like many others, I have been down this road and realized early on any one tractor is going to be a compromise. This can be seen clearly in the diversity of opinions of some very experienced members. I researched all this for months and tried out a boatload of different tractors. I really, really wanted a B Series, but we use our BX for mowing and tight places and a B would have been too big for tight work and too small for heavier needs. We wound up with two BX's, long story, and a Grand L.

We have 60-70-80 HP UT machines that are essential on other farms, but for where I live the BX and GL were the best choice.

I certainly understand that this may not be possible for many and wasn't for me most of my life in which case if mowing is not a consideration I would go for an L/GL.

After owning a backhoe, we now just fix up a list of projects and rent an excavator for a few days; works best for us, but maybe not for others. Yes, I would like to have one, experience has shown it is just not for us.

Sorry SCUT, CUT, UT (Utility Tractors)

We have three primary farms, my brothers care for one while my sons and I take care of another and I am primarily responsible for the one on which I live. Sorry for the confusion; hope this helps.

Sdd, I want to thank you for that thought. Because of what you wrote, I just bought a Kubota KX41-3v mini-excavator. It has 1200 hrs, $14k, 3700lbs, hydr thumb, travel speed 2.6mph. I'll use it mostly for land cleanup then sell it if it doesn't get used.

I'll sell my BX24 and get a 30hp tractor with just an FEL. I think the KX41 + a tractor (no backhoe) will cost the same as a (newer) 30hp TLB, and be more useful. It was interesting that the little KX41 takes up only 50% more barn space than the (removed) BX backhoe. And it moves - the backhoe just sits there, only way to move it is to put it on the tractor.

In my search, I heard more than once "the days of the $10k mini-X are long gone." One salesman told me so many contractors went under there were lots on the mkt a few years ago. But in the last 4 years nobody bought new machines so there are very few 2008-2012 on the mkt now. Or they have 5.000 hours.

Hey Sodo... congrats! Sounds like you made a good decision and got the best of both worlds. Dedicated machines and you don't have to fuss with BH removal. Mine is off now for the first time for winter and it will be interesting to see when I next put it back on. I am enjoying the back blade now but I have trenching plans when it drys up.
